BB30: NO - designed around a 68mm bb spacing.
BB368 and Cannondale cranks and similar: yes, for values of yes where you don’t mind having weird bearings.

Basically you need something that has a lowish crank offset and that relies on a long spindle with spacers for setup; you need bearings somewhere.

I think the real answer is just buy another $95 Tiagra double and be done with it. But I like weird stuff that’s cheap.

bb30 has a 68mm wide shell with bearings inside of it. 68mm shell can fit a 30mm spindle, but not with anything resembling a bearing inside of it.

Those rival cranks are the long spindle ones that work with BSA etc.

SRAM was really bad with marketing both types the same but AFAIK the ones that are truly BB30 only are two piece with integrated spiders.

The BSA30 bottom brackets aren’t really anything weird. Same exact bearings as would be inside the shell of a BB30/PF30 bike.

oh the shell can definitely fit “a bearing” (singular) around a 30mm spindle

not just in capacity but that it is all one bearing, and not actually a complement of bearings packaged together as we are normally lazy with our use of synecdoche

Is the drag the reason why bikes use ball bearings instead of conical or roller type?

It seems like a needle bearing bottom biscuit would give a little more spindle diameter over a typical ball bearing setup.

Historically it was because it was an adjustable independent assembly with threaded preload, and angular-contact ball bearings are by far the best way to do that

Now it’s mostly just from being cheapskates and not designing anything about the bearings themselves, with almost everyone buying radial contact cartridge bearings out of the catalog in standard industrial sizes with wiper shields instead of labyrinth seals

only a little bit bigger though, it gets you to Octalink/ISIS territory but not to 24mm

Shimano Octalink BBs had oversized spindles using needle bearings on both sides to take up all the radial load from the tiny 1/8" angular contact ball bearings.

SKF did a cheaper version in their ISIS and JIS BBs that Jan Heine sells, that are just needles on the DS and radial contact balls on the NDS.

Yeah, rival and force bb30 (excluding 10 speed force) are both essentially 386 cranks. They should work with a bb386 bottom bracket and the right spacer configuration.

Like ross said, rival would work. Don’t fuck with the fsa bb30 though, all short spindles, which is why they shifted into almost exclusively 386 cranks.

What tool do it need to get this stripped lever clamp bolt off?


Things I have include screwdrivers, hammers, cordless drill.

Drilling it out doesn’t bug me because the bars were cheap and I have replacements if I hit the bar. Just don’t want to damage the lever.

yes that is correct, there is room for a plain bearing. which rather resembles a bearing because it is literally a bearing that doesn’t have rolling elements. some bmx pedals have even been designed around such a bearing.

You can try tapping/banging/hammering in a torx bit that’s just a hair oversized, that should dig in enough to get purchase in the bolt head to loosen the thing.

If it’s not totally stripped jam some sandpaper in the bolt head and then see if it lets you grab

This is what I did for a well with a security bolt. Worked great. You can also use a very slightly oversized inch based hex instead of metric, but you’ll have to hammer it in and the torx will probably grab better.
