I’ve gone the other way. I guess losing 140lbs does that. Who knew.
we did discuss this yes. and the weight belt i think! how much money you want for these things?
I will let you know how much shipping is when it ships, can you send me your address again
Do you want some shirts and the Lakes as well? I get the impression we are around the same size but not sure
lakes will be too wide for me. not sure I have your same taste in shirts plus you’re much taller than me!
I’m doing some dumb bike shit so I might as well post it here. I was having a nice and lovely ride on my road bike with flat pedals the other day but noticed that my feet were getting cold in my running shoes, even with wool socks on. Running shoes let in a lot of air, which is nice when I am running and annoying when I am riding a bike in the winter. A conundrum: what is a nice, affordable, shoe that will rebuff wind, and will also fit my hobbit-wide 4E feet? My leather boots are too big and clunky. What is very outdoorsy but not leather? Waxed canvas! What if I got some canvas shoes and waxed them?
I just saw that Vans started selling some wides, so I hopped on my bike, rode through a rainstorm down to the only mall near me, tried on a pair, and they mostly fit if I size up! the box mostly fit in my carradice and I now have a set of bone white hi-tops with some whole earth artisinal canvas wax on order from Portland. I will update with how terribly this turns out. I expect that I will end up with a shoe that is too stiff to walk around in, but also still hella cold on a bike, and generally end up having lit $70 on fire. But I do love a dumb project!
I did something similar with some Chucks in college, mostly to see if they’d be water…resistant? (They sorta were but water still soaked in the stitches and around the tongue.)
I don’t remember the wax making them noticeably stiffer when walking around. It might have been more paraffin, though.
They’re going to end up looking filthy. I waxed a pair of white chucky style hightops recently (had leftover wax from redoing a bag) and the wax grabs and holds dirt like nothing else.
Also didn’t do much for water resistence for the reasons set out above, too many holes/seams etc and that plus flexion means no hope.
have you considered their MTE line of shoes? I’m on my second pair in two years. Mostly a sunny-day commuter, but riding them on flats on the commuter regularly. Paired with wool swiftwicks and i don’t have too many complaints. If they have wide option, even better. Bought a standard fit and had to re-lace them for my wide feet with high arches.
None of the MTEs come in wide, at least not yet, so I didn’t try any on. I shoulda!
Lots of running brands do winter/rain shoes made of some waterproof breathable fabric
Altra Lone Peak has a waterproof version. I’ve got the high top ones and they’re great.
Any BOA lace flat pedal shoes y’all like? I’ve never had either so maybe I’ll give dedicated flat pedal shoes with fancy tension systems a shot
I have the giro grav grav ones. Tracker I think. They seem ok.
They were the shoes that fit the best and didn’t seem as heavy as the 5.10 MTB shoes.
I was looking at those. Way better looking than 5.10 nonsense.
Curious how Bonts didn’t work and how Sidis are different. For me the “bathtub” sole thing Bonts have makes uncomfortable contact with the outside of my feet but the width (in the wide versions) is about right. I haven’t tried Sidis in a million years but I have a vague memory of them being too narrow even in the Mega last.
I cooked the bonts a couple of times but couldn’t get that ridge to stop digging into the side of my feet. Have been riding sidis for years that were maybe too snug but fine. These guys feel great. Haven’t ridden them yet but sliding my paws into them was nice
Any time I see Sidi shoes all I can think about is a time working my first shop job when one of the older techs was using this over and over…
Someone holding or mentioning Sidi shoes (which we sold)
Dude: so, you like Sidis?
Someone: yeah?
Dude: Sidis nuts.
Any recs for a lace-up gravel/XC shoe that’s really really well ventilated? My feet get fucken hot in the SoCal sun and I’m feeling like my experiment going back to Boa shoes is coming to a close (have had a pair for about a year now and I have to retighten them a couple times every ride now). Giro VR70 knits are a contender, but my experience with Giro shoes is that they’re pretty disposable.
