Is there an actual reason for a flat pedaler to ride a 5 10 instead of a Vans Half-Cab?

I’m a special kind of moron, but I rode a 600k in Vans and the flexion of the sole caused some tension/discomfort across the bottom of my foot. Maybe with stiffer insoles, but I imagine the 5.10s would have been better in that regard.

Or disco slippers. Lesson learned.

Stiffer midsoles, mainly. Better power transfer (I know, big whoop), but really it boils down to better support.

Ok, that makes sense. I see people wearing their MTB shoes around all day long; if the sole is stiff, doesn’t that hurt your feet? I only ride flat pedals with skate shoes (of which I am well equipped) and only MTB on SPDs, so I actually haven’t thought much about this.

If a shoe is too soft (Vans, Hoka One One), I find that my feet get really sore. It may be due to not enough control/support, or it may be that my foot flexes in the wrong place (i.e., closer to the arch). I’m not sure, though. When I wear stiffer shoe (that still have some cushion), my feet are less sore at the end of the day. Plain 5.10 Freeriders are a little too flexible for me (as are the Districts), but the Freerider Pros work pretty well on and off the bike.

I think the Macaskills look fine. Could easily look great with logo blacked-out.

The addition of an Adidas logo to the tongue of the new 5.10s takes my interest level from “nah” to “fuck nah”.
TBH, it felt gross buying 5.10 climbing shoes.
Why do I hate Adidas so much?

Gotta keep the mothership happy, I guess.

Nothing will ever look as good or work as well as just leaving a pair of normie shoes at work.

yep

That was one of the few benefits of being a computer programmer; not a single one of my corporate masters ever made more than a pro-forma peep about me wearing +4s and sidis at work.

Yeah, I’m currently rocking these with socks at my desk, so shlubbery is no issue here.

I just find it wildly uncomfortable to wear bike shoes around all day.

I sit at desk all day and wear these when I pop my clipless or rain boots off:

I replaced laces with bungees so I can slip on and off. They breathe pretty well since socks are often damp with rain/sweat. My attempt at stealth comfort shoes if my coworkers don’t look closely

I had an earlier version of those c.2013, a bunch of crusty traveller kids hanging out on telegraph avenue made fun of them as I walked by.

So, there’s that, I guess.

I’ve got some cheapo normie shoes at work for when I ride in in SPDs or motorcycle boots but sometimes it is nice to just wear the same shoes all day. Can’t tell you why though!

Yeah cuz they’re ugly
I guess the all black colorway hides the noise a little better

added data point:
mine were gray and electric blue, and I was probably wearing them with some really noisy TenspeedHero socks.

Crustpunk fashion critics may have been pretty much spot with that one

Received my Ride Concepts Hellion shoes yesterday. Appearance-wise, they’re a cross between 5.10 Freerider Pros and utility worker jawns. Fit is pretty standard, but the heel cup isn’t as deep as what you’d find on 5.10 Freeriders. Midsole is noticeably stiffer, and the stiffness extends farther forward than Freerider Pros. Haven’t been able to test sole grip/stickiness, but the hexagon pattern should fork well with most modern flats.
