Width and length. They donāt seem to be available in anything bigger than 12.5
No Idea what models Iāve tried, but none of them worked.
Gotcha. I canāt remember if any of the Freerider variants come in sizes bigger than 12.5. Current inventory seems pretty spotty, however, regardless of size.
The bike shoes might get designed by the Adidas arm on Euro lasts, while the climbing shoes are a different division thatās still on American lasts.
Do europeans have differently shaped feet?
Who knows. La Sportiva climbing shoes donāt fit me at all, but La Sportiva non climbing shoes fit me great!
Iāve got a bruise on my right toe (itās black under the toenail), I think it was from a stupid ride where I put 2 insoles in my disco slippers and rode in 104Ā° f / 40Ā° c for a few hours. Anyone else experience this toe symptom?
I donāt know if thats actually true but the lasts can vary. The first Bont cycling shoes were built on the speedskating boot lasts, and then were changed to a different set of lasts that I assume are higher volume.
Anyone have any experience with the Specialized Recon? The black ones with the gum soles.
Just seeing this now, but the Macaskill model seems to go up to a 14 and is one of my favorite shoes. I find other five tens run pretty narrow, so I end up sizing up, but the Macaskill I can use in a normal size for me. It looks pretty damn decent (atmo) and sticks to the pedals without any trouble.
I have a pair of the ridiculously blaze orange ones. not quite wide enough for my duck feet, ridiculously stiff sole, rubber compound left a bit to be desired w/r/t walking around grip. you might like em but they werenāt my favorite. I have the shimano xc5s as well and like those more, you lose a bit in stiffness but the lacing is better and the sole is actually pretty good for walking around.

had a NDS creak developing, that then went away after 1000km, and shortly after I noticed that my left shoe had become āmore walkableā
canāt find a crack in the midsole though, inside or out
I got one of those SO CHEAP pairs from Spec and havenāt really enjoyed them much. They might be a hair too small, though theyāre the same size as other Specialized shoes Iāve owned in the past. They are a bit too stiff for me, and I find ties the shoes to be a pain in the ass for commuting, where I ride only two miles. Better on long rides, but then the stiffness bothers me.
Thanks for that feedback. Theyāre on blowout from spec, so if I can get them for like $50 from my shop friends Iāll take a flyer on them. I heard they run small/narrow so I may size up a full size. Last time I tried clipless I think my shoes were not stiff enough and it led to all kinds of issues

Iām liking Bontās Riot+ with Sole insoles (thanks @Eric_Estlund for the rec). Wide and not too heavy. The nicer models have more / better adjustment and probably fancier all carbon soles if that matters
Iām using the road version, but the mtb version looks like the same shoe with more rubber glued to the bottom
I have Shimano wide XC7s and non-wide XC5s. I think the wide means xtra upper material for girthy feet, soles appear identical width. Both fit my wide feets better than my prev Sworks or Giro Codes and serve me well for road, cx, xc.
wide foot cru checking in. i pretty much only wear shimano. backing what @jdsmooth said; it feels like wide soles and standard soles are similar, or the same. I really dig the Shimano XC7 for what youāre looking for, and you might still be able to get the previous model on closeout (with the multi release BOA). I have the XC5 for cx/grav grav/mountain, and itās my favorite shoe
