But we haven’t even gotten to threads and deviation yet! So far all we’ve talked about are washers!
pick a thread pitch and be a dick about it.
I just really like 10x1
5x0.8 is cool too.
#10-32 can diaf
ATPAB
all thread pitches re beautiful
Y’all ever read a discussion on oddball threading with old crusty machinists? I had no idea there was so much out there, like region-specific fire hose threading.
I have spent 100s of hours over the last 20 years trying to find a simple code compliant way to connect a 3/8" compression speedy valve to a 3/8"G braided faucet line with readily available parts and have never been able to come up with a solution that takes less than three parts.
i was gonna ask @adem if he has any experience. seems like they still rely on the mating surfaces being even ever so slightly softer than the washer, but if that condition is met it’s hard to imagine how things would loosen up with proper torque. might be one of those “best the first time” connections though
I have definitely learned more about bolts and corrosion during my time in the drone boat mine than in the bike shop.
Unrelated I got to fondle this 1 bong bearing today at work.
Shifting gears…
If for some reason you find yourself coming through central Virginia this year… here is the calendar of dumb rides we have going on:

11/18 - Sturgeon Century
You won’t have valid data to compare washer efficacy if you are constantly changing the test ride.
Need a crayon graph for which lockwashers to match with what size tyres
oh i fucking wish
i’ve fondled a very similar configuration of paperweight. old neighbor’s buddy worked for skf and gave him a blem. i sure as fuck could t find anything wrong with it but i have no clue what i am doing. was really neat.
Wow that’s most of it that’s around here
Will definitely be there for Dragon Run Grav Grav and likely Old Dirty South Hill. Dirtbags maybe.
damn i just looked it’s it’s like 630 miles away. you are right down the street from a cvs and i do need to pick up some trash bags and a candy bar, but i’m not sure
If one were to come up for one </= 200k ride which would you say is the best time.
Best time can include the most type 2 fun per KM.
1/28 - Northern 125k (a road ride from the front door of the shop that goes through some nice rolling backroads north of Richmond. From the shop.)
2/19 - Monster Cross 11 (a 50 miles gravel race with 400 other people at Pocahontas State Park. Two laps of a 25 mile course)
2/25 - Secret East End 100k (a road ride with a couple semi-spicy gravel sectors. Usually fast pace. From the shop.)
3/4 - Dad’s Bear Creek Birthday Ride 50mi (my annual birthday ride at Bear Cree Lake / Cumberland State Forest. Lots of gravel lux and empty tarmac. 45 minutes west of the city.)
3/25 - Dragon Run Grav Grav 70mi (“road” ride that is 33% unpaved. Zero amenities along the way. 40 minute drive from the shop.)
4/16 - Six Rivers 200k (pretty much a road ride, plenty of bucolic views of eastern VA. From the shop.)
5/5 - Old Dirty South Hill 75mi (the larger portion of The Tobacco 200k as a stand-alone ride. 40% unpaved. No water for the middle 60 miles. Very fun route. Leaves from South Hill Va, about an hour southwest of Richmond. Free parking).
5/21 - Dirtbags 100mi (shred portals, fence hopping, powerline cuts, fire road, dirt bike trails. Your feet will be soaking wet. This ride is dumb as hell and super fun. From the front door of the shop).
6/24 - Swift Campout (basically ride a 50 mile MUP, take a ferry, then pitch a tent. River to swim in. From the shop.)
7/8 - West Point 200k (another mostly paved 200. Also very nice. From the shop.)
8/19 - Jamestown Nocturnal 200(ish)k (it’s at night. It’s almost exclusively on a protected bike path. It almost always seems to rain some. From the shop.)
9/30 - Tobacco 200k/100k (The 200k combines the ODSouthhill with another 60 mile loop. 42% unpaved. Long sections between water. Hard as hell. Super fun. 60 minute drive south west from Richmond. Starts/ends in Lawrenceville, VA. Emergency pizza available afterward. Free parking).
10/7 - Holiday 300k Invitational (It’s a 300k with 65 miles of gravel. Starts in Farmville VA which is about 90 minutes southwest of Richmond. Lodging required).
11/5 - Coffee Grinder XL (The definitive tour of Richmond’s gravel bike-friendly park systems and shred portals. Almost exclusively in the city limits. 63 miles, 36% unpaved. From the norther edge of the city. Outpost is the halfway point for snacks.)
11/18 - Sturgeon Century (end of season century ride. Small amount of obligatory gravel. From the shop.)
