I started wondering about self-healing composites for velodrome surfaces a while back after someone posted a video of a nasty crash on boards that resulted in major splinters and track repairs.
If you want to use it with disc brakes, no. The disc mounting face on the hub would end up too close to the frame. Beyond that I don’t know about parts interchangeability of end caps.
13ga spokes? shimano hubs will mostly accommodate that but many rims require 14ga nipples leading me down the path of getting phil wood to make me a few thousand spokes for dumb bike share bikes
nice- any worries about reduced strength with those? one other bonus of getting single butt spokes for us was all nipples are the same and we really needed it at the elbow for rear nds leading spokes
Some worries but not aware of failures. Only available in brass for this reason.
yeah i saw that. our vendor also laces (or at least laced- i’m far from the bike shop at this point) incorrectly per shimanos specs for hub brakes. they’ve allegedly made some improvements but given our vendors history i have my doubts they did it all the way correct
I am vaguely in love with how this wheel looks and very glad I gave dyno a try. Just gotta hook it all up and set up the front disc on this thing! (And then … the rim crusher at the back…)
Hoping someone can advise what I need here. I ordered the wrong freehub when I ordered hubs by accident. What freehub type should I look up to replace with HG ?
yeah that’s for xd or xdr. i left bike shops before the advent of xdr so i couldnt tell you. many freehub bodies are specific to the brand but i wouldn’t be shocked if something else from a major mfr just so happened to have the same exact dimensions. you know, by coincidence.
what chinaceramic hub is that?

I would think the best bet is the seller, but maybe see if it looks like a novatec might work? There’s ID guides for those, could see if following it with your FHB features leads to something
i dont think i posted this. i’m tempted. but i don’t want to/need to build any wheels right now
I am thinking of building up a 650b wheelset for my Coffee Grinder because dithering, etc.
I’ve been happy with the DT 350 hubs I’ve been using and I was hoping that if I used the same ones for this wheelset I could just swap between wheels without changing anything (with the same rotors and cassette), at least in the rear. I might do a dyno in front, but adjusting the front brake isn’t too bad. When I look at the 350s for sale now though, they look…maybe different?
Did they change the dimensions of them such that my plan wouldn’t work? I still might use them, but if they are different dimensions now, I’ll probably also check out other options rather than just automatically pick them again.
With the newest hubs there are subtle differences but all the freehubs and endcaps are the same so you should be able to yolo. BUT there are still legacy design hubs being made too. I got one the other day for a HG build I’ve got on my plate at the shop.
How does one find these legacy design hubs?
this was basically my 2 wheelset dream. swap the freehub body and thereby cassette assuming the same hearing works. tool free other than a hex key if you have slow release bolts and then you don’t have to worry about drivetrain wear
What variant are you looking for?
