Am I the only one still using linseed oil?
I don’t fuck with any alternative spoke nipple thread additives, Dt pro lock and just go. Don’t get a cool lil container though.
I do use some lube at the rim, rarely need to true within the first season unless someone dumb happens.
I just built a wheelset with the teflon pipe thread compound, it was a bit messy but I was also applying it to the nipples themselves
partly to get more teflon material into the threads, and partly to keep the Sapim HM washers in place when inserting them into the rim
was not as messy as using antisieze compound though
these rims are a little dysmorphic to behold in real life, with the outer dimensions being 40mm wide and 45mm tall
the 36mm tire is currently 33mm x 39mm on the i30 rims with an inner tube, where for BRR they were 31mm x 35mm on i18 Challenge Strada Bianca Pro HTLR 36 Rolling Resistance Review
popped one of the inner tubes while seating the rim tape, waiting on new matching long valves to set them up fully tubeless
the Moné raw brass nipples (without the usual nickel) plating are a good match for the Pillar spokes titanium plated gold anodizing
I’m curious how this goes for you— I have some i35 pub rims and a set of 584x47 bokens
What’s the best PTFE-free option for spoke prep? Is it back to the dark ages of linseed oil, or are there good modern options without PFAS?
I wonder how chain wax would do, give the threads a swipe or two across a puck of the stuff? Instead of waiting for your wax pot to start liquifying, maybe you dip the spokes in boiling water first?
I’ve been reading that the DT’s patent on their ratchet system has expired. I presume this is the OG ratchet design, which may explain their newer iterations. Either way, I haven’t seen any hub-only options from non DT makers, but given the price of the 350 hubs from euro sellers these days, I doubt there’s more than $25 to be saved with more competition here.
In terms of spokes, DT really seems to be loosing the race to Sapim in North America. Not sure if this is a result of distribution or what. Still, the local shop with the spoke cutter and bulk spokes seem to be able to build a wheel for like $30 more that I can after I pay retail for all the parts so I’m just bringing them the hub and getting the rim+spokes+nips+labour from them. YMMV.
I can vouch for this. They are wonderful.
Also, I use nickel anti-seize on the advice of @ergott
If I made wheels for others, I’d consider using spoke prep.
It me.
they are already trickling into asian OEM wheels: 9Velo CC45 CC55 Carbon Wheel Review: An Engineering Masterpiece - Hambini Engineering
and there’s a whole bunch of hubs on Aliexpress especially for straight pull, and you would still save a few hundred bucks vs. buying DT350 from Italy (they have been clamping down on German and UK retailers)
I had been thinking about doing it to get DT Ratchet hubshells in fancy colors
I think I’d have trouble trusting something that is that much cheaper than a euro-priced 350. The labour arbitrage isn’t there as 350 aren’t made in swiss. If it all goes badly, I’m into a new wheel build so I’m not too experimental RE: aliexpress and the like.
I’m keen for aftermarket freehub bodies to arrive w/ harder HG spline surfaces (either re-inforced alu spline or ti). Given there’s no 11-34/36 MS cassettes in the 12sp GRX pipe, am stuck with notched DT splines
Boost rears and some random fronts
yeah sucks that they’ve been so noncommittal on that otherwise I would’ve wanted to get a bunch of these jawns
reminds me of this guy selling seemingly buckets full of 24h 240 front hubs | eBay
lol that looks like someone had a rim recall or something, to unbuild a bunch of road wheels
GODDAMNIT
ordered two 27.5 PUB rims back whenever they were cheap. Was planning a nice Valentines Day wheel building party with my partner and just now realized one of the rims they sent me is a 29”.
Any one want to trade rims?
At least we got one wheel built but I’m feeling pretty dumb for not noticing…
she wanted two green spokes
I think I have a matching 27.5 Pub rim
and will be camping at Cape Disappointment the first weekend of March
Oh hell yeah. 28 hole? I’ll buy it from you or trade.
yes I’m pretty sure some of mine are 28h
on top is a single plusbike rim just because
the middle narrower pair are 32h but likely the closest match for yours
one of the bottom two wider rims is 28h
@Euphorbia could also dibs from this pile for his MTB
