Very excited to see fredbike dev
Posting this here again, thank you again @bward1028
What’s the deal with tools for a guy who is maintaining his wheels and occasionally building one? The Feedback Sports truing stand is on sale at REI right now, people seem happy with it:

Tensiometer seems like a tougher one. There are examples on amazon for <$20 but I am guessing they are junk? Name brand versions all seem more pricey than might be necessary for my uses but I’m willing to be told it’s an investment lol
also SQ, what’s current wisdom on reusing spokes & nipples when doing a rim swap as that is probably where I’m starting?
I have a cheap tensionmeter and don’t use it for hitting a specific number but just to see a uniform reading across spokes
you probably want a tensiometer for your first builds, but yeah a cheap one should be fine.
I would never reuse nipples. not worth the tiny cost savings. spokes is more of a maybe for me. unless you’ve broken any spokes at all, then absolutely not.
i would buy a used park tool stand on ebay. might not handle modern 29er wheels with tires on though
my TS-2 didn’t cost that new! when did they all get so expensive?

since this scan is missing page 91 (and I’ve given up looking for a PDF that isn’t), and it’s kind of an important one, here you go:
You know, I was doing a quick read of that section and there seemed to be a missing instruction for rotating the hub but I just thought it would make more sense when I was actually working on a wheel lol… Thank you!
using the tensiometer is my least favorite part about building wheels. hurts my hand! i dunno if i trust myself enough to just rely on the pings though
ball out
I have the aliexpress version of that that was $40?
what I learned using it is that it’s a lot easier to do a good job building carbon rims
Or ball out slightly less
the tricky part is you have to manuever the thing into a space between the spokes where it has free motion
i have one of these, except it’s the FSA carbon one
It’s marginally less annoying than the park tensiometer, i haven’t calibrated it ever.
i ping all my wheels anyway.
i got confused, it’s the Gerd Schraner book i actually like https://poehali.net/attach/art-of-wheelbuilding.pdf
Alrighty I have procured a truing stand and ordered new brass nipples and a new Alex Adventure 2 rim. I am reading online that boiled linseed oil is the thing for lubricating the nipples. That’s easy enough to get at HD but I am also seeing Jobst say to use motor oil. Anyone have strong feelings about this?
I just use whatever, either silver anti-seize (can be messy) or a probably 30 year old bottle of Phil tenacious oil because those things are already around. Would probably use motor oil as well.
Linseed oil and specialty “spoke prep” acts as a mild threadlocker. As long as the spokes are properly tensioned you shouldn’t have an issue using a regular lube.
Oil works fine but grease will stick around longer.
