Are you lubricating the threads? This shouldn’t happen.
I always lube the nips. Shit happens sometimes. It’s rare, and easily available with a little planning.
Feel like I learned a wheelbuilding lesson today. Spent a couple of days doing the rim swap on the rear wheel of my LHT in my spare time. Got it tensioned and trued last night and felt pretty good about it so I taped it up for tubeless.
This morning I decided maybe I should put some grease in the NDS bearing and yeah the cone is like 1/3 pitted. It spins good after putting some grease in it so I’m going to send it but I’m thinking now maybe I should have checked that first lol…
Edit: never mind, just ordered a cheap hub and spokes and I’m going to take the wheel apart and start over. Couldn’t find a replacement cone, couldn’t find a replacement wheel with tubeless, didn’t want to ride roached bearings or a new bike so all new wheel it is
Yeah, it’s not a dynamo for some reason.
I’m deeply flawed.
Okay I (might have) did it
Notes:
Lacing a wheel from nothing might have actually been faster than doing a rim swap because I found the nipples easier to manage shartmo
I think I had too much tension on the NDS to start, had to take some of that off to get the rim centered in the frame. The Feedback truing stand is kinda YOLO about the actual position of the rim relative to the hub so that didn’t help me much
I did a half mile ride around the block and didn’t notice any noises or other shenanigans. How long before I’m back in the asploded parts thread?
Overall this is fun if not time consuming at this stage. Want to build more wheels to get more practice but I’m the kinda bozo where most of the wheels I want are probably cheaper to buy built lol
i’m way late here, but
i used to use purple loctite- get the runout down, drip a bit in each, then finish building your wheel that day. VC3 is neat, but is specifically aerobic curing where loctite only cures anaerobically.
i think wheelsmith spoke prep ahcktchually acts as a lubricant more than a mild threadlocker. at least that’s what some i was told at some point. if an expert on our team has the downlow, i’d love to know once and for all
probably a while dude- building wheels is cool and not super hard if you take the time and follow instructions. if you did that, they are probably going to hold up better than most machine built wheels you’ve had over the years.
i am not of substance but i have rarely had to actually true wheels i’ve built any considerable amount. even the early american velocity a23s i built, because one crash and it was just totally fucked.
Regarding your nipples, I HIGHLY recommend getting a nipple grabber. I’ve had this Unior thingie for forever and it’s never failed me.
If you really want to handle your nipples luxuriously, get you a nipple shuffler. You can drip your nipple cream right into the tops of the nipples.

I may need a nipple grabber. I’ve just used a pick but it’s not great.
I got like a $2 3d printed nipple shuffler that’s great
They’re probably fine. I did a pretty half assed build on a set of wheels for my disc trucker and rode them on and off over the winter and into the spring and they’ve been fine. Turdly rims (Rhyno Lite XL) if it matters.
It is kinda funny, just as soon as I got my LHT operational again, this guy posted this bike up again:
At this moment I am resolved to wring some more use out of my rusty old bike, but if he had posted it last weekend idk lol
Most days I’d choose to buy a new bike than build wheels (and end up doing that more than I should, actually).
i’ve purchased two sets of wheels from @BEEutiful_Wednesday_DDS to avoid building wheels and haven’t used either of them yet!
i believe i am out of wheels so you’re gonna have to find a new dealer
I don’t really have a need for any more wheels but my nipples are dying for some of these Unior tools
dad used to yell “nipple” at other drivers with a force I’ve never managed to replicate
what’s the current readily available 20” (406bsd) rim without brake track, 32h, wide enough, not mega heavy? tubeless is a bonus but not a requirement
I’ve had great experience with the Alienation Malice but I think it only comes in 36h.
