it wouldn't be tarck without a dyno thread

Most of the ones with a cutoff. I like the IQ-X, the Luxos, the Cyo, and the CyoP, and the cheap aluminum bodied ebay ones are pretty good.

The IQ-X is nice because it has a ridiculously long throw, the CyoP & Luxos have got a huge even nearfield, and the Cyo is a bit less of all three. The -X suffers from the standlight being much dimmer than the powered beam, so a slow-speed climb will flicker all of the way (the cab ebay ones have a dim enough light so that the flickering isn’t nearly as noticeable.)

My wieeeef has the Revolution and it’s been trouble-free for at least 5 years now

Can anyone comment on the waterproofness of hubs? I did a shitload of river crossings in my recent poopbarn and was expecting my SP hub to crap itself at any time. It didn’t. Was fully submerged on multiple occasions.

I’ve only submerged a son once but I’m really curious what @Andrew_Squirrel did to theirs

what ebay jawns you talkin? i love my iq-x but between low speed flicker and no standlight i think the cyo senso premium might win. especially bang:buck

Probably the foxeye ones on ebay? They don’t have a standlight but are super cheap.

I absolutely believe that orc had a positive experience with the eBay lamps but mine were essentially unusable. Stand light projection at full movement

I assume bad qc, so it’s a gamble and might be worth it for how cheap they are (nice metal housing!)

Foxeye. About as bright as one of the 40 light unit Cyos, but the standlight discharges fast enough so the flickering is minimal. And it’s easy to move the mount ear up to the top of the casing so it can be hung from a rack deck.

I’d bet that QC is minimal on those guys. I’ve got 3 of them installed and they all work well, but the weather sealing on them is – ahem – not exactly great and the decorative cutoff line on the optics ended up in a different orientation on each of them.

Fwiw I’m finding the non-usb Luxos pretty sweet. It has the new school ultra wide optics, with less brightness than the usb luxos but obviously more reliability. It’s maybe not quite as bright as cyo premium but i do really like it, net effect in complete darkness is that I feel like i can see more stuff. Again compared to cyo premium, it added a couple leds for the stand light and this seems good for ultra low speed output with my SON.

Have any of you used the kasai light yet?

Yo, $22 Panasonic hubs, might even be worth the $15 shipping charge.

Oh, 6-bolt too

Has anyone used panasonic hubs? How do they compare to Shimano?

I ran the SRAM branded version for a while and it was fine other than the weight.

I’ve had a Sanyo (same difference I think) for like 7 years now with no issues. I think they are supposed to be draggy even with the lights off but I just leave mine on all the time

i have a rule of thumb for figuring out if draggy or not
is this dyno hub $20
yes - draggy
no - maybe

Well what it is interesting is that I seem to remember that basically all the hubs have pretty similar drag with the lights on, whether they are $20 or $200. Since daylight running lights have been shown to reduce your chance of being run over, drag with the lights off doesn’t matter much to me!

I have one I got at a bike swap for $10 and have used for a year+ now. it’s exceedingly fine! I don’t have graphs or whatever but it works and I don’t notice any weirdness compared to the SP dynamos I use on my not-beater-old-26"-mtb-commuter type bikes. Would absolutely buy again.

I have one on my commuter and have used them on some customer builds. They’re fine. Definitely draggy but cheap and reliable.

I’ve got 2 of the Sanyo/Panasonics. One going 7-8 years, and the other about 5-6. No problems with either. :man_shrugging:
Maybe they have enough drag to put a little dent in a fast rando time, compared to SON etc. I sure don’t notice, and rarely turn them off.
