it wouldn't be tarck without a dyno thread

I’ve been chasing what I thought was a fender rattle on my Traffic for some time now.
Last night I realized that it was my IQ-X!
I haven’t had time to investigate further, but I’ll report my findings here when I do.

Uh oh is the capacitor loose? Is the standlight not working anymore? Asking because that happened to me. I have a cyo with rattling cap that is retired pending someone trying to get a new one soldered on.

As far as I can tell it’s working normally.

Heads up that the cheap but well built IDC Stout dyno wheels that Shart and I (and maybe a few others) have are available again after being MIA for a few years. They used to be $99 but still super cheap.
Now Featuring 650b!

I’ve had the silver 700c on the front of my VO for like 5 years now and it’s been great.

That’s pretty cool. And a pretty still a really good price for a Shimano disc wheel!

Kinda surprised they didn’t go for a rim with tubeless capability though.

Yeah I’m this close to dyno’ing my fixie with this.

Just went for a wheelset. $200 is a steal to avoid scratching my head at the slow-developing nipple cracks and hollowing brake tracks which I guess I’d been waiting to fail before replacing

Thanks for the heads up!

I just built up a wheel with one of those newer Shimano UR700 dynamos. I didn’t expect much of a difference from the older 3D72/3D80 versions, but DANG the light turns on at wayyyy lower speed. Like, at walking speed it’s still flickery, but it’s putting out a usable amount of light.

that’s awesome to hear. eventually i have a wheel being built with one but i don’t have lights for it yet or anything.

you’re a major shimano nerd- why do you reckon it’s that much better?

I’ve got 2 coming

Ollie Whalley just built up a wheel with one of these specifically for the Tour Te Waipounamu, which he won. He’s a big fan.

unfortunately i’m not a magnets engineer, just a mechanical engineer

What front and rear dyno lights should I get for my adventure bike? will mostly get ridden on road and gravel and probably will not be used for a ton of slow nighttime climbing, so flicker is less of a concern. Is the cyo premium worth it?

What’s the best way to mount a front light to a nitto M18 and a rear light to a seatstay?

Cyo premium is totally fine, so is luxos m (the non usb one) imo. Source, used both.

Nitto sells a thing for mounting to rack legs. It works well imo, i have one that has been solid for years.

On the other hand, a light that supports hanging will get onto a nitto rack boss with a bit less faff.

Cyo premium is good, but an IQ-X might be better for that, depending. The Cyo beam is wider, but doesn’t throw as far ahead. The IQ-X is narrower, but throws farther and is rated brighter. The stand light on the Cyo is better if that matters. The IQ-X is already setup for upside down mounting.

Secula and Topline are both good. FYI the fender version of the Secula works great with reflector brackets.

What diameter is the rack strut? I bought a bunch of p-clamps a while back to mount a light to a rack. If the diameter is close enough, happy to send you a few for the cost of shipping.

Edit - have used and still have all of these lights on various bikes.

Is the rear switch constantly lit on the iqx? Can you turn it off without using tools?

Bike24 also has the Trelock LS905s on sale for the same price or cheaper than the IQ Cyo Premium, and you can get them in red and blue.

Very bright, great illumination pattern and has an aluminum housing.

I think the switch light is always on. Mine is hidden by a bag so I never actually see it.

Had this little cover piece fly out yesterday when I was adjust the angle on my IQ-X DC e-bike version. Couldn’t find any documentation online about it.
Turns out it’s the cover of the wire exit slot under the band. You have to unscrew the switch cover to put it back on and I ended up placing it under the o-ring seal which seems correct. Note that the switch cover is reverse threaded to what you expect, I needed a jar lid gripper to get some purchase.

So I built up a wheel last night with a Son 28 and I am absolutely blown away at how smoothly this wheel rolls in the stand compared to Shimano hubs.

That is all.
