Miguel's fat-tired fopmobile

oh sweet
i texted coutrytruck bro about picking up a prime brisket and smoking it tomorrow
he said oh shit i’m coming over for dinner
i said cool bring yr tig welder
he said ok

well that was easy, guess i might built a little front rack soon
let the foppery begin
oh yeah and moyer is bringing tacos and a puppy over on sunday
if norman doesn’t wreck their pup then i might pry some info from him about racks and tig welding and brazing and what not, shit he might even be collecting some building shit again for fun…

so china carbon rims are no-no? for disc?

Rim brake + clincher no. Disc yes.
and according to heatheory my 58mm trail bike should handle fine with a small front load
but i can say right now with where i sit on the bike it actually handles best with a small bit of weight in the rear…
your actual experience lines up with mine

I’ve put handlebar bags on a bunch of bikes in that range, and even a u-lock kinda sucks. A six pack makes for some bullshit.

I just bought a frameset in the same ballpark of longish chainstays for rear panniers, but that’s already been lowtrailbroified. Am hoping for it to do both atmo

It’ll be interesting to see what the actual geo ends up being, I could end up getting a crosscheck fork (and maybe slightly reraking it) to get less offset.
ps i’d have him braze bosses on top of the fork crown on each side and bolt the rack there up top
and according to heatheory my 58mm trail bike should handle fine with a small front load
I think the largest load I put on my midlifecrisismobile when it had a medium-trail (57mm) fork was something in the ballpark of 20 pounds. It was fine, though the front end really wanted to fall off to one side or another when climbing steep ramps.

It’s a bit more stable climbing with a lower trail (36mm) fork, and I could push the rack a bit forward without making it hideously tippy, but tbh the most obvious advantage I got with a lower trail fork was a lot more clearance for fenders plus 29mm tires.

Get me into 700x28-32s, porteur rack, fenders, etc. basically what the ahearne does but with disc brakes. Is there a porteur geo that can be done with a 396ac fork?

Did you ever even PYB?

Yes

fork length is irrelevant except to the degree (lol) it determines the HTA

porteur geo isn’t particularly different from rando geo

Kirk will fit a 28 and a front rack

Porteur confirmed

this is that 25cm of saddle bar drop?

Yeah

New porteur biek IMHO

If I was in your shoes I’d just see if someone could modify the ahearne’s NDS chain/seatstays to fit a dick brake. It comfortably fits Nomad 28s, and really who needs anything else?

Pretty sure that double chainstay can’t be modded
Plus, n+1?

It’s steel, of course it can be modified.

Don’t mod the ahearne. Nobody will appreciate the mod come resale time. The Wintrotta was endlessly badass and no dentists cared.

What are you carrying upfront, again?

Porteury stuff
Basically I want to get out of the ahearne and I’d like something better suited for what I’ve been making it do.

I might contact Joseph but he’s been difficult to work with in the past.
