The flexibility was my reasoning as well. I considered getting a spider PM which would at least free me from being stuck on a crank arm length, but limits crank arm options (although it seems lots of folks have gone to the SRAM 8-bolt).

If I had all the money in the world I’d probably have spider based meters, but that still doesn’t help with my fixed gear built with vintage cranks.

Seems to me that there’s is a lingering bias toward crank based power meters as a result of SRM being the best on the market for the longest. Presently, that position clearly belongs to Favero. IIRC nothing else beats it in terms of precision.

I definitely prefer the robust simplicity of spider based.

Plus I treat pedals poorly and as often as rebuild my XTs I find it hard to believe cramming electronics in there is a good idea for my use case. YMMV I guess.

That’s definitely something worth considering. I’ll say the Favero pedals have been more robust than I anticipated. The ones I converted to SPD have not been treated gently. Though the degree of abuse they’ve been subjected to is constrained to the limits of my gravel bike. I imagine use on an MTB would be different. I suspect we’ll find out. Most folks wouldn’t risk an SPD conversion on an $800 set of pedals. I imagine these new ones will see pretty broad adoption. They do say they’re limited to grade 3 and under. Which means very little to more as I don’t MTB much.

Good but you may need to shim them with essram cranks. I have the Senicx ones

My high milage/high wattage buddies blow through a set pd-r8000 every year or so. Maybe the average Tarck rider isn’t riding 12hr a week, but buying an expensive wear item seems kinda crazy when crank arms or spiders don’t wear out.

I’m guessing that due to @heath 's geographic location, he does not submerge his pedals nearly as often as I do. Must be nice. Haha.

True. I do ride bayside gravel pretty frequently which is occasionally muddy…. With salt water. I go through a lot of cleats and if I don’t rinse my bike after things get bad quickly.

We’re doing 100 mile ride tomorrow that is 38% unpaved. It has been raining steady all day and won’t blow out until early morning Lots of saturated atv trails, tree farms, various wet shred portals, and several creek crossings. I wouldn’t do this on YOUR power pedals. Let alone ones I paid for. Ha.

Everything is.

I’ve had great overall luck with my plethora of new and used spider based power meters. It’s certainly possible that there is inaccuracy between them, but it’s all “close enough” for my riding these days.

also measuring power from the pedal vs the crank vs spider vs spindle vs hub vs wheel off trainer vs wheel on trainer and calling one style more accurate is like saying a fisher price telescope is less accurate than the Hubble.
