I really don’t understand mounting to brake levers. Cleaner mounting, sure, but not usually that good of positioning. I have been pretty lazy with my Trance 29, but damn thats fucking way inboard. Just need to grab a mount from the shop to get lever a smidge closer to thumb.
Actually in this camp too because TRP brakes and Sram shifty bits… but even when I was Shimano/Shimano it was shit man, no.
I always swap my Shimano integrifters to separate clamps. Otherwise, I’m constantly smashing my thumb into the big shift lever.
Right now I’ve got SRAM and Shimano, but I just got a clamp for the SRAM shifter. I didn’t really feel like fucking with that Problem Solvers thing.
I’d like SRAM more if their hydraulic brakes weren’t so worthless and if their 11 speed groups didn’t feel so chintzy until you get to Force or higher
I loved my SRAM Red 10speed road stuff, but man I can’t get on that SRAM wagon no more after riding around on their Force hydros for a while.
Hey @theKearney do you know if the long cage Force or Rival will shift into a 46?
@adem might be a better ask, but SRAM basically wants you to do 1x for lots of range in the back and all their 2x stuff is really road focused gearing. You can use a GX 10 speed dangler with SRAM 11speed road shifters to get at least 36t in the rear, but I never tried for more.
honestly my knowledge of shimano stuff is only rivaled by my complete lack of knowledge about SRAM stuff
Cheers Moira. I had my Sram red 10 speed shifting cleanly into a sunrace 11-40 but that was with an old XO rear mech. I’m keen to use that if I go to 2x. The biggest I tried my GX10 on was also a 36 tooth.
This. I have the shifter clamp about an inch inboard from brake clamp. Close enough to reach but out of the way enough to not have the extra levers all cramping up my hand space
Same.
That ispec stuff really only works if you have tiny hands and/or don’t care about good ergonomics.
i like. i will be using this soon.
I’m pretty sure @Andrew_Squirrel coined the term. Send all royalties that way.
Shimano used to make the best wet brakes.
Now they just make the best wet brakes under $240 for a set. Unless you have some leaky ones. Which you might.
Sram used to make the worst brakes.
Now they make some really good ones (RS and RSC).
Tektro used to suck too.
Now they make some of the best brakes on the market especially when factoring in price (Slate T4).

I’ve got SRAM Level T on my full sus bike and am wondering what I am missing re:having good brakes. These seem to work just as well as the XT I have on another bike.
I’ve been waiting for a set of disc brakes to disappoint me but not even those dumb Hy/rd failed to stop me. I’ve had some leaky Shimano… that’s about it. They all seem to stop the bike.
Levels are fine brakes. Not in the same class as Guide RSC or Slate T4 for overall performance and feel. We live in a golden age of $35 Altus level wet brakes that do the job well enough.
Level T on anything that isn’t a weight weenie/xc-race type bike is not okay.
Actual mob:ing deserves actual brakes.
Iv’e seen some entry level DH bikes with Level brakes and that shit is for shame…
I have Levels on one bike and Guides on another. While the former are (somewhat) easier to bleed than the Guides, $30 Shimano jawns feel noticeably better than the Levels.
I have brand new XTR calipers on another bike too. I dunno… the Level bike stops, brakes aren’t fading. They seem to be in the same ballpark as all my Shimano brakes. I’m not a big brakes person I guess.
They’ve maybe felt a little lacking in modulation or feel lately, like they’re either on or off, but it could be my imagination.
So, concensus is all brakes are good enough and will slow/stop a bike. Some are gooder, and some are expensiver.
What’s better than good, closer to great? Hope? Trickstuff?
