Say it ain't so: The Assploded Bike Parts Picture Thread.

I can’t think of a single bike part, except maybe the rear brake or some elements of the gears, that won’t 1) fuck you up if it breaks and 2) strand you up shit’s creek

That said I just ground a bunch of rust off a Surly top tube and repainted it because a bunch of tarckers told me it was probably okay so yolo

I guess I also recently broke a spoke on a borrowed bike and kept riding it out of convenience so really don’t listen to me

I still swear by Thomson seatposts and stems despite their terrible reputation here.
If I can’t break 'em, well…

This one’s pre-broken

I broke a Thomson stem once. I wouldn’t ride a pre-broken Thomson seatpost.

I mean if we’re being real, a wrap of fiberfix under the clamp oughta do it

Also you gotta drill out the end of the crack to keep it from propagating

JB Weld

Just carry a spare

Did I miss any?

Oh yeah it’s a Thomson

If it breaks, it will use the free market to pull your saddle back up by its bootstraps

Took you a minute but you got there.

Just throw a hose clamp around it.

Weld it.

Do you want a reasonably nice takeoff Bontrager post that came off of a mountain bike I bought ages ago? If so slide into ye olde PMs

I really appreciate the offer, but I found a suitable one in the depths of a bin. It has setback even! This Thomson is now spare parts and scrap metal.

Discovered this today on a clean looking m730 XT crank i picked up earlier this year. Very disappointing, especially for a part i thought was pretty bombproof

Funny thing is those cranks could probably go another 5 years with that crack. Could also only go another 5 minutes too. You never know how long it’ll take to break until just after it breaks.

I have a set of campy cranks with the same crack, commuted on them for 3 years like that and just kept my eye on it. Do not recommend.

You could chase the crack out with a small burr and blend/polish, but you might find it goes deeper than you you’re willing to ride after.

I was successful with some sugino mighty cranks in the old NR style

It goes all across the arm. I’m a yolo cheapskate but I’d toss that thing.

new gate/shed handle then

they’re bombproof, but also 30+ years old

If a bike part is older than the youngest tarck poster it no longer owes anyone anything.
