Man, early fatbikes were trash.
I sold my pugsley frameset, wheels and tires for fifty bucks lol.
Are newer fat bikes any better - Or just new weird standards?
I still ride my Pugsley but I have 29+ wheels, I like it as a monster-truck hybrid but I think the geometry is probably long in the tooth
I think the new ones benefit from more modern geometries, lighter weights, etc but they still need wonky parts like the cranks/bb/hubs/rims etc
Yeah, my spesh fatboy was a 1000% better bike than the pugsley (like, it was actually a fun mountain bike to ride) but it still had a 190mm rear hub, 150mm front hub and 100mm bb shell. No ridiculous offset fork and rear triangle though.
Most have settled around 150 f/197r thru axles. But then cranks are easier to find now that they have gone that wide (100mm wide). Of course, some q jokers are still probably doing 170/177 just coz. Yup, Wednesday and Pugsley is 135/142.
Oh! I should also say that my Fatboy was the last generation to have QRs!
So that was weird and terrible.
oh boy 190mm OLD and qr sounds like wiggle city.
My buddy’s got a Manitou Mastodon on his hambiek, and it rides kinda like a normal hardtail with stupid wide tires. I keep telling him to build a 29+ wheelset for it, but so far no dice.
My test ride on a Pugsley almost put me off of hambieks altogether.
I spent enough on my QR equipped Fatback that I’ve decided to avoid riding anything newer and pretend it’s still great. La la la can’t hear you…
(it actually still feels pretty great though)
(actually this is how I approach my entire fleet of outdated bikes)

They’re sending me a set of replacement attachments for free but I am very annoyed.
I have to use my B-squad shoes and I hate them. What is even the point of clicky shoes if they’re not super, duper stiff? Flats & regular shoes are far more comfy
Rode my White Industries BB to death. Let’s see how easily these self-extracting crank bolts come out.
Shimano square taper bottom bracket appears in the background like the shitty car following the top gear presenters around on a road trip.
Those are tricky, for sure. The best way is just to use a pick up pull it out. Make sure there is so tension on the cable, of course, and use your hand to push the cable as you’re picking at the head.
Thanks.
oof I’ve been there many a time
