yikes! bad casting?
the bearings on my 2020-vintage kickr are starting to go so it’s been demoted to kid trainer duty and replaced with a v2 core while I contemplate DIYing the bearing replacement on it…

I did a bearing swap on a Core v1 a couple months ago after it got REAL LOUD in a short space of time. Followed the reddit guide but had to really wail on the axle with a brass drift and a sledge to get it free of the bearing.
Some corrosion on the shaft that cleaned up with green scotchbrite, no metal loss on the bearing area.
After that it was easy to use a nail set to punch the bearings out before tapping the new NTNs in using a socket on the OD and reassembling with grease. Blissful quiet afterwards.
Unknown prior use as I bought it used, but it would have had ~15000km over 2Y.
yeah my old one is a v1 core, I’ve seen the reddit guide and it seems like something I can do, I just don’t want to deal with getting the tools/parts and having it out of service for a while. It’s not in the REAL LOUD, ALL THE TIME phase yet but it’s definitely gotten real loud and felt a little weird a few times, so it’s probably ok for putting my daughter’s bike on so she can pedal alongside me a bit this winter
(also the v2 core does wifi broadcasting and will repeat my HR data over wifi which is handy for my use case)
I wonder about this with my trainer (suito elite) as it’s started to make some repetitive chirping noises during hard efforts.

Tools - the reddit list is fine, but you don’t need bearing pullers or belt spray. You can knock the bearings out from inside face if you have a nail punch after you push the spacer out of the way. Add a sledgehammer and a brass drift of similar diam to the axle end if it doesn’t slide out or move with a gentle rubber mallet tap.
If you have all the above you’ll be able to knock it out in an hour unless it’s perma-corroded in place. A second person will help when removing the axle/flywheel to prevent damaging the electronics.
Don’t over torque the pulley bolt, you’ll know if you do as the flywheel won’t spin as smoothly.
You have to DIY over here as there’s no service out of warranty at all. Might be different stateside?
pretty sure the warranty is all used up on mine so it’d be a DIY job regardless and I have no desire to ship this thing anywhere, appreciate the advice and tips on this! I’ll file it away for a spring project when the zwift account gets put on pause again…

It’s an older kickr core, i got it along with a 1st gen kickr for mad cheap as both had issues. The issue with the 1st gen was pretty mild, forget what, think i just needed the QR spacer kit they don’t sell anymore or something. I use it now.
Core needed a bearing swap, but i don’t plan to make my fancy bike a trainer mule so i gave it to him, along with bearings.
This happened as he was pressing the bearings out, he’s not a brute but i wonder how much pressure he was applying and if knocking them out might have been a better idea.

I haven’t replaced that bearing and it looks like it would be much more if a pain to do.
Does that bearing have a shoulder it rests against or something and can only go out in one direction? I can’t believe that pressing it would fracture it before the bearing moved unless they were pushing it somewhere it couldn’t go, (or there was a preexisting fatigue crack…)

Not yet. Breaking it down tomorrow and hoping I’ll find some kind of ID. I noticed replacement kits include the axle and am wondering just how much axle-wrecking force I’m about to deploy.
I think if you push the axle to the NDS/brake side if disc you can get in there pretty easily
