Souplesse Casings and Bike Soup - The Tire Thread

I had a set of the folders in a 32c widthway. They were great, pretty supple and fairly light, had pretty good luck as far as flats went. For what I payed for them (wholesale cost) I was real happy

Cheers. Yep I’d be doing tubes.

Just put some 700x32 terravail rampart LSes on my DT r460 wheels. Pretty easy to get on, not too hard to seat with the compressor. Curious to see if they widen over time, initially they seem skinnier than the roubaix 32s they replaced.

How are they looking in the supple-ways?
Low, medium or high ?

Soo

700c
GP5000 32 - 295 grams
GK TL 32 - 290 grams

Hive mind?

if the gp5k is anything like the gp4k- it should be an unequivocally superior tire, but the gk will probably last longer

There’s also a new Schwalbe Pro One out…

I got a deal on the ramparts, they seem possibly more supple than the Roubaixs they replaced, but the reviews for the GP5k seem pretty universally great.

I have been running the GP5k TL in 32 for a little over a week. Install was easy. Running some of the Orange Seal endurance in there right now to coat them. First ride home I swear they felt sluggish, but then seemed to break in a bit. Jumped into my first crit in over a year last Tuesday (got permission to do the B race since I have not really raced in 2 years). Surface was still damp from a storm and it was a small field, so the race was NOT fast. The tires definitely were not holding me back at all. Hoping it’s dry and faster tomorrow so I can get a more accurate feel. But so far, they are everything they should be.

I need to break out the calipers and measure now that they have a tarck double century on them.

Also, it’s pretty great that there’s options for performance-minded TL tires in -28 and -32 ways now!

Most ā€œperformanceā€ bikes from the big makers are coming with 28s, and emphasizing the ability to run still wider tires. You love to see it, folks

GP5kTL measures at 32.2 on an Easton R90 with an inner width of 19.5mm

I have not really been thinking about it until now, but it looks like my commute each way is about 5 minutes faster than when I was on Bon Jovies or Switchback Hills. Anecdotal evidence, but evidence none the less.

If they’re anything like my Pro Ones, every one of those tires will probably be great

When I first read that headline, I thought that they were saying that it doesn’t need sealant and they were referring to sealant as soup. Soupless road tubeless tires.

ugggggg, got those 30mm tubs on the davidson, pulled the fenders off to fit the tires on…then killed the rear tire after 15 miles.
surprisingly, didn’t flat it. killed the casing or the treadband, it has a gnarly bump in it now and a wiggle in the treadband. so annoying.

Mounted up those Vittoria Terreno Zero 650x47 tires this week.

A few things:

Back and anthracite sidewall versions have the same designation on the sidewall and the rep at Vittoria NA said they are the same tire. They are not. All black ones came in at 500g and 509g each. Anthracite ones were 550g and 555g. Sidewalls feel thicker on the heavier ones for sure. Tread seems the same.

The set up easily. Loaded each tire with 2oz of Orange Seal endurance and spun around the parking lot. No noticeable drop in pressure by the end of the day.

Measured at 47.6 when I pulled the bike down to ride home.

Initial thoughts on performance:

I don’t think they are as zippy as the standard casing RH Switchback Hills. Ride seems more like a WTB By Way. Maybe a tad faster? Ride quality was really good though.

Seemed very grippy too. It’s been dry so no way to know, but I have high hopes for performance in the wet.

Both were reasonably round and true.

Will measure again and report back after a fewer rides.

Somewhat related.

Last weekend I put a WTB Venture on my green CG before doing a bike camping trip.

FUCK
THAT
TIRE

Would never suggest anyone try it. Absurdly slow. I could feel it just sapping watts as I rode along with a friend.

Out of the saddle it felt just squirmy and gross.

Never again.

Bummed Kona is speccing this tire on a bunch of Rove models. It’s so bad it may make them harder to sell.
