Souplesse Casings and Bike Soup - The Tire Thread

The circa 2018 Nachos Pass I had were underwhelmingly sized on CR-18 rims, don’t recall them stretching much at all.

I love PVD. He’s my kinda nerd.

Color me surprised

I’m rebuilding my rear Rawland Stag wheel and peeled this dried orange seal sealant off a single Compass Babyshoe Pass. Interesting to compare with my previous weighing of the dried sealant from a WTB Horizon which was 38 grams.
Note that sealant had completely dried and there wasn’t any damp residue left.

A new record!

Include the weight of the valve stem, and you’re at the same weight as a lightweight 26" tube. Of course, there are other advantages to tubeless, but it bums me out that weight isn’t always one of them.

The interesting part is that I have zero memories of getting a flat on this wheelset since 2017.
Meanwhile I think I’ve broken 5 spokes on the rear because I used the Sheldon method for lacing to match up with the marred lines on the hub flanges from first build ( LBS)

Man I’ve been running a pair of switchback hills for years that my friend gave me after he cut it up on like 2 rides and couldn’t get it to seal (one of the cuts was a big sidewall thing). I bet I can beat this record with one of those, but I’m not done with them. I will be using them to absolute destruction.

Is orange seal that easy to peel out of a tire? My tires with Stans or Truckerco always have these glued in alien nests that are impossible to remove.

so is it just widely accepted in the industry that TLR tires are ~100g heavier in practice due to rim tape and sealant?

if you’re not weighing out your sealant are you even living?

Pretty easy, reminds me of peeling dried glue off your hand in grade school. Never tried stans but I’ve only once seen an Oranganimal

Are byways better than horizons?

I like these horizons cuz they’re huge and I ride my bike wherever the fuck I want and carve deep wild turns and hop curbs and it’s just so fun

But I was riding on a very muddy road by a river that floods and I learned the hard way that horizons have literally no traction in mud, less than any other tire I have ever used

But they are great when it isn’t muddy

Mmm dried tofu skins

Byways are the same listed weight as Horizons

they’ve both changed over the last few years, but when I fondled them the center tread of the Byways was much thinner than my first-batch Horizons

so besides the corner knobs they are likely faster too

where the Horizons rode kinda like a Hetre with the thick tread

I’ve not ridden Horizons but I liked my Byways more than the smoov Terravail Ramparts that replaced them. Byways felt as good if not better on road (when inflated enough) and definitely better in dirt.

Edit: Steering did get weird with Byways on the pavement when under inflated, but that also exists to a point with Ramparts too

i’m running circa 2017 horizons that have been aged in a dark place for three years and they’re great, havent measured but i’m running 27psi tubless and they’re so nice, seated easy as well.

Are you drinking this koolaid or not?

I have Byways on my HG, they aren’t going to do much better in soft stuff/mud than Horizons
