Picked up a gash on the edge of my tread on mine after less than 1000 km that wouldn’t seal up, unfortunately. Probably just bad luck for me, so will give em another go around. Which leads me to this question, how much prep needs to be done between tire swaps, at minimum? There is a lot of dried sealant on the interior rim wall all around which makes me wonder if they could use another wrap of tape, or just scrape this stuff off and yolo?
I’ve trashed two fronts in the last 6 months. Definitely bad luck. Hit something crazy at speed blasting three holes (one in the sidewall), was able to plug and get to destination. Last week on a giant chunk of glass that filleted a pinky nail size bit of tread off but somehow didn’t actually “puncture” until 10 minutes after I got to work.
But anyways… rinse the rim, if the tape looks good, new tire and go.
Awesome, thanks Braden. What are you using to plug? I was chatting up the guys at my preferred LBS about what kind of plug they like and fella was telling me he doesn’t even bother trying to plug, just throws a tube in then trashes the tire, which seems… wasteful?
Dynaplug for anything over 35 psi is the way to go. Bacon rarely works well enough in my experience. That first tire took two rather expensive plugs but got me to the shop and saved me the embarrassing walk due to forgetting to carry the correct tube for the bike I was on.
That being said… I’ve also been saved by a plug when it was a small hole that wouldn’t seal because the sealant was mostly gone. So there’s that too.
But yeah, normally I would carry a tube and if the tire looked like it was going in the trash and I wasn’t in a hurry, I may have saved the dynaplug.
I’ve been riding a first generation pair of GP5000 TL in 25mm for two years now and they’re starting to square off with get slow leaks
I could happily go back to Schwalbe or wait for the new Continental GP5000 S TR, but seems like a good time to try something new
Does the Challenge Strada 25mm hold up any better than the Vittoria Corsa tissue paper? You were saying that vulcanized worked out better than handmade?
Anyone know if the Pirelli 26mm TLR tire is worth a shit?
Zero experience with the smaller Strada Bianche so far.
I’ve put some miles on the Challenge Strada Pro TLR. Had a set in 27mm… Got an unfortunate sidewall cut that ended the life of one early. Had another pinch flat on railroad track thing during a practice crit. I attribute neither of those to shortcomings in the tire other than maybe limited tread coverage for the smaller sizes.
I’ve been running the 30mm version for just over 600 miles now. I ride through the streets of Oakland every day which has plenty of glass and whatnot and they’ve been fine so far. I’ve only run the handmade tires, not the vulcanized.
Worth a shit in my experience. A bit softer riding than GP5k TL, a little faster feeling than ENVE SES, maybe slightly more harsh than Corsa TLR, but besides that it generally just feels like a fast tubeless tire. Would pick the tire to be different than the Conti crowd, but i’m still a Corsa fan myself.
I have some negative feedback on the G-One Speed. Coming off gravel onto pavement this weekend, I folded the rear as noticed by my riding partner. Then descended through some twisty hairpins in which my rear felt really wobbly. Took a look back and the tire looked under-inflated.
I’d assumed I had a puncture or some such that sealed up or that my valve might’ve been leaking. Got home and checked the pressure and they were at 45PSI which is where I set it before I left on the ride.
45PSI (40PSI front)… Not low enough to be comfortable or give better traction. Washboard killed my wrists and yet still not high enough to fell confident in turns at my weight (88kg)? I’m not happy.
What size is the tire?
38mm
Goddammit…
I’ve been avoiding these, but you’re right.
Dang, I have had zero bad experience on 38x700 g1speeds run at 40/45 over thousands of miles. Though I’m not exactly testing the limits of adhesion as I toodle around Chicago at eleven miles per hour.
That’s actually why I dislike Schwalbe. Getting them to not squirm underneath me without having the pressure to high is a really small window.
i hate to say this but the teen hearse tires are the only 650x48 that still feels good pumped up enough to not fold. wider range of acceptable. everything else i tried (horizon, gk, terravail) has been a disappointment.
i want to get a new pair of soma grando blue labels. 650x42, weighs 600g iirc. wasn’t fast per se but felt so fine until dumb low pressures and took 2+ years of 80-120 miles a week to give me tubeless grief. but maybe i just hadn’t known actual supple yet and would fucking hate them now…
i was gonna make fun of everyone here for having to write big disclaimers and backstories before admitting that they actually like rh tires but then i saw that stem thing and i get it now.
how do those affect the supple feel? the point is to provide more stability and rim protection at lower psi correct
I’ve only used one on a 700x44 WTB raddler. I guess a similar equation where when I got to the grip I wanted I was smacking my rim (around 25psi). Insert solved that. I’m theory better bead retention and sidewall support.
I’m not sure how it will change feel in @halbritt ’s case, but I suspect it will help.
I can’t say I was really chasing “supple” as the bike this is on is mostly used for underbiking. But I like it.
i need the cx cushcore for my cross bike. are they really hard to install?
