I just bought the Silca Eolo IV. Seems decent. Probably 4x the cost of that one, however.
Still riding on the Tufo Speedero. Got 'em out today on a dry day. Sealant is holding okay, hasnāt lost any pressure. On pavement, they were fast as ever. Did a little sandy hard pack and they felt really nice. Good traction, very low rolling resistance.
Went to work on the 650b Speed King 2 with Rimpact insert. No luck getting 'em to seat tubeless on the first try with a compressor and the valve stem removed. Next Iām going to try seating one bead with a tube.
Excited to try these guys. They look extremely delicate, though. Probably gonna end up being nice for a second, then die a gruesome death.
Well, got these things mounted:
Couldnāt get 'em on with a compressor. Tried with the front, then went and got a tube to seat one side, which I installed on the rear. Front was all full of sealant and had the rimpact insert installed. I wasnāt looking forward to the mess of breaking it down, putting in a tube and so on. Then I watched this video:
Couldnāt entirely replicate that with the rimpact installed, but I could pinch the sidewall and pull it up onto the bead seat. Worked around both sides of the front, blasted it with an air compressor and it seated easily.
Then pulled the tube from the rear, installed the valve, insert, and sealant, and repeated the process on the unseated side. One shot with the air compressor and I was good to go.
Little b-screw adjustment to clear the pie plate and Iām good to go. Chain is too short for big/big, but Iām not sure I care. This one is stretched and I have a new one to go on, so weāll see. Might have to shim the brakes to get both wheelsets to work. Theyāre both DT centerlock, though, one 240 and one 350, so it might be fine.
These tires are⦠light as hell. I can tell Iām gonna love 'em, and I hope they live.
Finally, 2.2 clears just fine on the frame and fork. Iāve quite a bit of clearance radially and at least 5mm on either side both front and rear.
Why do you people continue to put sealant in a tire thatās not yet seated? Squirt it in through the valve after its seated.
Windex on the bead and rim will help almost any stubborn tire pop up, even with a low volume floor pump.
I donāt continue to do this. Itās the first time. Using the Silca sealant which canāt be injected through the valve stem.
Windex wouldnāt have helped this one either, Iām familiar with that trick.

That Silca sealant works pretty good though. Worth the effort for you? Iāve been thinking of using just the replenisher so I can inject it though the valve as the carbon bits seem to just form a clump in the tire most of the time for me. Or just continue to use Orange Seal.
That looks mean as hell. Those Contis really are fast.

The Panaracer ālow allergenā stuff rly chaps my ass. Oh whatās that-- contains natural latex & walnut shells. Two VERY COMMON ALLERGENS. I think if I ever meet Jan I rly need to ask him about why he keeps billing it as ālow allergen.ā Of his many spurious claims this is the easiest to debunk.
technically peanut butter is low allergen in that it only has one allergen if you count allergens by how many not how serious or how much

Why does everyone hate Stanās? Iāve never ever had an issue with it.

Reminder for me to clean up some of the Stanās mess in a rear tire of mine and see if Orange Seal will do what Stanās hasnāt been doing.
Also, Heathās bike broke my brain last night. XC MTB tires on a carbon drop bar road bike? Those look ENORMOUS.
Same. Thought there was something going on with the photo (like the 3d crap), but no, it was just hella wide tires.
My goal, of course was to settle an argument in which there was no terrain that I could handle on this bike that would necessitate the use of a dropper. Handled climbs easily that Iāve had problems with in the past. Hit the single-track behind my house thatās tough on a good hardtail, much less a gravel bike and⦠I donāt think a dropper wouldāve saved me.
Iāve used Stanās in the past. Orange Seal is definitively better. Recently had a series of punctures and thought Iād try the Silca which makes bold claims about the holes it can seal. Had a puncture that I put two dynaplugs in that wouldnāt seal, so I popped the tire off, removed the Orange Seal and installed the Silca, re-inflated the tire and it sealed, so thereās N=1.
Iāll try it for a while and see if it improves things. Likely, my issues are caused by the fact that itās a wet year, and Iām more committed to riding in the rain this year, with fenders and kit and such, and Oakland is covered with glass.
I actually found that having the rimpact insert helped seat the beads, both by hand and with air. Something to grab onto to coax the bead onto the shelf as well as applying gentle pressure to the bead with air running through.
Iāve read that as well. Thought theyād pop up just fine, but didnāt. Tire seems slightly oversized. Now that Iāve done these once though, I doubt Iād have similar struggles in the future.
I think most of it is due to the rim profile. I had a 2.2 s on my bike here and it does not look half as badass.
Is your bike 27.5 or 29 though? I seem to be making out 27.5 on the sidewall.
Anyway, I cracked open my leaky reen to switch it from Stanās to Orange Seal.
First off, this looks unlike any Stanās Iāve ever re-visited in a tire. Goddamn gross:
Second, it doesnāt look like it is playing well with the casing at all. As if it werenāt adhering and thus not building up a layer to seal the sidewalls.
So I did a quick wipe, seated it (first try with regular floor pump), filled it with 2-3 oz or so of Orange Seal (endurance), and will see if it weeps out of the sidewall like the Stanās did.
