Souplesse Casings and Bike Soup - The Tire Thread

I like that schwalbe has them tied with left over tube. Not crazy about the boxes.

Ugh, so my prime ride has been out of commission for two weeks due to a broken spoke nipple. Took off the tire, did some tape surgery to replace the nipple, sealed it back up, and watched a slow unstopping leak around the valve stem.

Removed/retaped a couple of times, finally ordered new stems and fresh milk after being unable the stop the flow.

Today everything seated cleanly and I’m not seeing visible leaks, but the tire deflates after ~30 minutes. Add more milk? Remove and add another layer of tape? Other suggestions?

internal size of rim?
size of tubeless tape?

More tape and more milk atmo.

If it holds for 30 minutes I’d work on my milk dance technique and add more milk.

I doubt the valves have anything do with it; you need to re-tape the rim. Your surgery didn’t hold, and the sealant and air are escaping from the cut you made, finding their way out at the valve.

I don’t know what width you need, but most shops in town will have Stan’s or the equivalent in a variety of sizes. You can also track down the correct width of 3M strapping tape, which is literally the same thing as ā€œtubelessā€ tape, only much, much cheaper by the foot.

I’ve had a slow leak in a tubeless setup for a while, and this is not what I wanted to hear, but it’s probably what I needed to hear.

But on the other hand I just added milk last night, so until I go check the tire pressure today, I can assume it’s all good

I had a wheel that would not hold air longer than a day regardless of the tire, amount of sealant, etc. I suspected the problem was the valve/tape interface, but it turned out that I had damaged the tape in a couple of spots due to careless use of tire levers. Replacing tape is a PITA, but usually solves those WTF problems.

Counterpoint, I already diagnosed with no particular evidence a leaky valve as the problem and bought some cool looking purple valve stems to fix what I assume is the problem

wait I can just put those in when I re-do the tape. Win-win!

Yeah, exactly. Use this as an opportunity to up your matchy-match game.

Or Gorilla tape. I seem to get better longevity from Gorilla, but I’ve mostly used it on low pressure cx + mtb wheels.
Cutting Gorilla down to proper width is a bummer, but after that it’s really easy to work with.

I’ll never understand the people who insist on gorilla tape. It’s so fucking sticky that it’s almost impossible to work with. The strapping tape is perfect in every way other than that it’s hard to find in widths greater than 24mm.

Strapping tape seems to set up better. It is how I’ve done my last few wheelsets.

DQ: I bought the big roll of 24mm strapping tape. Can I use this on like a 30mm rim? Overlapping so it covers all the width?

You don’t need to cover all the width, just spoke holes and most of the rim-bed.

I’ve had much better results if the tape covers the whole inside of the rim and even goes up the walls a bit.

I am taping way narrower rims than most of you, and I always wonder how high up the walls you can go without it interfering with the tire

i have taped some narrow-ish rims and i think it does not really matter

Gorilla is based in Cincinnati and I recommend their tape for like. Holding a old shitty planter together. My bike usage of it has been only shit.

gorilla tape hate crew checking in. fuck that stuff it’s not even good for regular tape things.
