You joke, but to spend 5 minutes in proximity of any Seattle bike trail is to be accosted by at least a dozen deafingly squeaky drivetrains.

Formerly Seattle. Now MA. The Boston burbs salt their roads liberally. I think I put the Surly away when the roads were finally clear and figured I’d clean it on a warmer day. Got to it this weekend. When it’s 15F and dark, bike maintenance becomes: add more lube to the Fe2O3 grinding paste slurry coating the chain.

it doesn’t matter, they appear to be wrapped in the tanned large intestine of a road kill yak encountered in mongolia (or maybe just some kinda sausage casing from a german nudist beach BBQ)

my mum and dad are currently riding in europe (inc germany, but not sure if actually riding there) on some German nudist beach spec tandem along the lines of this:
i will reccomend they attend a nudist beach (and not send me photos)

I went to a place with not-enough bike parking so I found the most rusted out drive train and locked to that bike, convinced it hadn’t moved since before winter last year.
Sure enough I got a call over the loudspeaker a few hours later to move my bike. I didn’t stick around long enough to listen to what the chain sounded like, but I couldn’t imagine it even moving.
It’s revolting and hypnotizing.

yeah gotta be running at like 500psi under a couple of “substantial” german nudists who’ve been to a few too many BBQs (parents are not that substantial or, thankfully, nudists)
