The Rivendell Rage Reader: A thread for the pure joy of hating on Grant P

There was a riv bleriot for sale locally in about 2k9 which I was tempted by, but I was too fixie-brained at the time to get involved with it. Kinda regret.

got bored with sleeping baby in my lap

started down a photoshop rabbit hole for eventual RB-T repaint, not what I would call ā€œdoneā€ but you get the idea. thinking I should sell as a decal on Etsy

Love it and also getting real Princess Bride vibes.

Has anyone ever adulterated a rivendell? Like carbon fork, disc brakes, electronic shifters etc.

Just wondering

The black parts look good

No conversion necessary, I think we can all agree that a Riv is a sort of end-game bike. I hope to have some funds one day to build an Atlantis.

Appaloosa is the ā€œbudgetā€ Atlantis and a couple cm shorter but overall pretty much the same, right?

edit: a Grant ramble about the two, but both are $1750 for f/f

There’s some confusion over the difference between the Atlantis and the Appaloosa. The Atlantis came first, and when it was made in America, we wanted an equally good Taiwan version—that bike became the Appaloosa. Now they’re both made in the same shop in Taiwan, and they are not just ā€œas good as ever,ā€ but better.

Geometry, Tires that fit, Ride, Handlebar recommendations…

The Atlantis wheelbase is about three to four percent longer. In theory, the Atlantis will feel smoother, less reactive. In practice, any difference you might feel in a side-by-side test is far more likely to come from the bar, stem, and wheels.

Both fit tires up to 2.25 inches max.

From 2025 on, the Atlantis fits a 27.2 seat post. It is not better than 26.8, but the Taiwan seat post maker had a harder time making 26.8s than 27.2. In any case, we recommend a NITTO post. Either Taiwan or NITTO will last you ten years to forever, and so the cost per year is low either way. NITTO posts are the best in the world, and when you order a seat posts with your frame, we subsidize it just a little.

The Atlantis top tube is about a centimeter or two longer than the top tube on the closest-sized Appaloosa. That makes it marginally better for swept-back handlebars. I have both bikes, set up similarly, and I can’t tell ANY difference.

iirc at one of the early nutmeg noreasters a dude showed up with a Riv that he had brazed disc brake mounts onto. I’ll have to dig through my photo archive.

Nice. I don’t think it was this one that I saw though. Just checked my dormant gram account and it isn’t on there!

Was it the grey and dark red one with 3 frame tubes?

This one is pretty good - not THAT adulterated tho

I remembered one that was bastardized and painted black (big Grant no no). I don’t know if it was this one? Seems to be fitted for a Rohloff.

I read in one of the old Rivendell Readers that there was a cyclocross model offered with thinwall tubing but I couldn’t figure out if they even actually sold any or just made 2 for Mark to race.

Not adulterated I guess but antithetical to what Grant’s design philosophy has eventually become.

that was the Rivendell Legolas and there were several batches of them
