Been a while since I’ve seen an early Gryphon. Dig it so much.
A shame the newer ones lost the segmented fork, I always liked those.
They didnt ! Thats a replacement from some custom builder in the US. Igleheart? We were out riding one day when he ran into a bollard. He has a ti Gryphon as well, pretty sure that one came with segmented forks.
Found a wrap around Jim Blackburn rack at the tip shop for $5 which spurred a half day of dithering to tweak it to fit with the fender and light. Swift bag sits pretty good but the tombstone is useless, would need a complete replacement TIGd on.
I’ve felt modern Blackburn stuff is still great for the price
New Albion Crankset GS 46/30t 11-sp | Soma Fab Shop or something else? fam member is not a cyclist so lower gearing is good.
maybe some used triple in 2x mode off ebay instead? if so which
RX600 is only a few dollars more.
I wish I would have paid the few $$ more for the RX600 rather than Soma’s trash Vortex crank that they lied to me about chainline and q factor
i have an ultegra 36/46 (i think) brand new i will selling you for the $75 + shipping if that is reasonable/wanted
Aesthetically the square taper fits the vibes more, but im sure the RX600 bettah.
@BEEutiful_Wednesday_DDS sent you a msg
lol mind elaborating? i heard the chainline was “dummy wide” on these, but I hadn’t heard anything about the Q-factor being not the 158mm quoted on the product page
Before buying I emailed Soma and asked for specs. It got forwarded to IRD and then directly to Jim and this is what he said:
“The crankset is adaptable to both a 68mm and 73mm BB shell, in its 68mm form the chainline is 44mm, in its 73 it is 47.5.”
I even said how I was confused how this works and if things had to get spaced out funny but was told It’s fine b
Well wouldn’t you know, buy the thing and install it and it’s a 47.5mm chainline and because spacers are offset pedals end up 7mm off center to boot. Centering pedals gives 50mm chainline.
I guess q factor was what was listed, I remembered that wrong. Should have just bought the 600 level grx crank, can’t remember why I didn’t.
Haha what, they’re seriously telling customers to just offset the whole crank to the side to fuss with the chainline? Combine the numbers you’re telling me, and “44mm chainline on a 68mm BB” means he was telling you to run the cranks with the NDS arm 12mm further out than the DS arm.
at first i was like
but then i was like
Mostly upset about incorrect specs from Jim. On super sale it was a decent price and came with the BB.
For some reason I was REALLY concerned about chainline on my Bassi Hogs back. I don’t know why it’s just like any other bike
I bought the Shimano grx600 thing
Not sure what I was thinking.
I need a 5th 26er like I need a hole in the head. I guess its a chance to use that new crossmax wheelset I was gifted and all that 9 speed xo gripshift I’ve accumulated. Can leave it in the shed at my bros house in Blenheim for when I come over to visit my folks.
A dithering thought rather than acutal dIthering on a bike I have or plan to have:
Could the grx crosstops be setup as brakes on aero extensions so as to have hydro disc brakes on drops and extensions?
Extension dither, would it be possible to cobble a set of hydraulic hose connectors to allow the crosstops to be mounted without long hoses running out in the open air?
Look what I found at the tip shop a few weeks later!
(didn’t buy, I would never put lowriders on that bike and certainly not ones like this.)
Not sure where to put this. This dude, I think in Malaysia, does all these bike builds/hacks/mods on his deck using rudimentary tools for the most part, doing his own paint. Using a plethora of Aliexpress parts that I’d never seen before, including those bolt on disc mounts for non-disc bikes etc. I went down the rabbit hole big time.
