Can’t wait to see this built up. Fuck yeah.
I’ve always kind of coveted an Atlantis. Should I buy this pre-beausaged one?
Edit: sold
You will love it.
Getting it bedded in. Some things I noticed:
- the chain is just long enough for 50 with 32 on the cassette
- the gearing is way taller than I expected, but probably because these tires are Velcro on pavement
- 650 is a total magic carpet ride
- Turning feel is surprisingly good and normal
Might just 1x after all. I suffer from trying to make everything a pavement bike, but I’m wrong to do it to this bike.
you might be able to get a different chainring/spider set for smaller 2x gearing?
there’s maybe a sensible 1x setup from Ratio Components, but otherwise it seems like you’d kindof be rebuying everything to convert it
Dropping to 46/30 for the crank and 11-34 for the cassette will help quite a bit.
Do you not find you spend all day shifting? All I remember from my brief time with a 46 was how close it made the cassette feel.
Fred, the only 1x stuff I’d need is a ring and cassette, same for the 46 setup. ETA: Really I’m just having a hard time imagining the range I need.
I think it depends on how you ride/how strong/fast you are. For me personally I found 46/30 + 11-36 cassette to be perfect where I could almost treat it like a 1x and stay in the 46 ring most of the time, and treat the 30 as low range dedicated for hills.
With 50/34 I was not strong enough to push the 50T all the time over small rises and would constantly be shifting down to the 34 while simultaneously shifting to a smaller cog to keep my cadence comfortable. Too many shifts and double shifts, and going to 46/30 solved that.
It’s true, 46/30 and 11-36 is the one 2x drivetrain to rule them all.
52/36 11-28 >:(
Does anyone still do the 2 wheelset thing for an all-road bike?
My Jamis coming in will have to displace a current bike and I’m thinking my road bike will serve as a sacrificial parts donor, but the majority of my riding will be on pavement so I don’t want to push around big tires all the time.
I’m definitely not willing to swap tires on one wheelset.
I have a decent space to store a wheelset that isn’t used all the time, but does it actually work as smoothly as I think it would? I highly doubt the wheelsets would have identical hubs.
Many new gravel bikes are built around supporting 700 x 40-ish and 27.5 x 2.4-ish wheels, since they have the same outer dimensions.
I had two wheelsets for a while, but ditched them. Two purpose-built bikes offered me wider ‘range’.
I have two wheelsets for my NFE.
One has 2.1 Thunderburts for rough offroad rides and one has 42mm Bokens for road/gravel and commuting. I mostly ride the Bokens so the burts don’t wear out too fast and because they fit safely under fenders for commuting in the winter.
The hubs are all different but I don’t have any problems swapping wheels.
ATMO IME YMMV even with the same make & model of hub indexing and brakes can sometimes be off between two wheel sets.
You can fix indexing easily enough before a ride, or while riding to the start of the ride, but brakes might be too out of wack even for shims to take care of.
I’ve personally found two bikes each trying to do their own thing more fulfilling than one bike that is always half assing things.
Post can’t be empty
I also enjoy the increased clearance over small deadfall.
But yeah 46 is damn near perfect. If I need more I’m on an actual road bike.
A friend blessed me with this Bridgestone NB-26. I didn’t need another bike but I couldn’t say no so I built it up coaster brake stylee. But I’ve been missing having a fixie, and after Nutmeg I really want a Scorcher. So I raided the tag sale and found a Surly 135mm hub + matching Velocity rim. New spokes and nipples are on their way. I’ll be skidding in no time.
Does a pair of snow wheels count? If so, yes I do.
One thing I didn’t think about is being able to run two different wheel sizes, although with this particular frame it doesn’t appear from what I’ve read that clearance changes with wheel size. It will clear a 50mm tire max on both 700c and 650b rims.
So I guess that using a smaller wheel for an off-road tire could effectively lower the gearing with a smaller diameter. BB drop is published at 71mm.
This does sound like a lot of fussing about for something I’ll always question whether I’m happy with though.
