Weird Build Dithering Thread Infinity: Part 2

are you mid drive averse?

i’ve found that the torque sensing bb’s work fairly well with the bafang rear motors as well.

Not adverse, still looking at those as well. Without having anything to test ride, a setup with a torque sensor might be closer to what I’ve experienced so far.

Also Grin Tech seems pretty great from what I’ve seen so far.

Thoughts on picking up an old-ish (mid-2000s) Merlin to spice up and flip? Needs seatpost, saddle, cassette, tires (I have all of these in my parts bin) but otherwise should be gtg. $400 hoping to flip for at least twice that.

Only catch? It’s a “womens” frame and n+1 syndrome seems much more prevalent in men, so making the flip might actually be tough if I sell it as such

does it have women’s geometry? I would just list it as whatever size it is.

In case you have a LOT of free time on your hands and wanted to learn more about hub motors

I finished turning the Doppler bones into a putative camping bike. The Burts fit under the stock fenders fine, radially, but the fender width is a bit scant. Will maybe go wider and plastic at some point. The Ritchey Kyote bar is crazy wide but feels good cruising around the neighborhood. Paired a brand new dangler and shifter with a five year old cassette and 20 year old crank. Still need to tubeless.

You might want to go shorter stem with a bar that wide.

just get weird

Maybe that new 0mm stem

Yeah, I’ll dither more. It’s definitely slow-handling, but long chainstsys are long. Saddle nose to bar tips matches my mtb with slightly narrower bar. Position on bike feels pretty good so far. I should strap some shit to it and go for a longer ride.

Could you post a top-down-view photo of the bars?

Excellent–thank you.

those cables are giving me all of it.

Shit, watched all 2.5 HOURS of this and it was interesting, mostly a lot of motor theory and going through some scenarios about motor power output, heat output, etc, and some time spent with the motor simulator as he was explaining things and and answering questions. Sounds like there may be some future videos about some of the topics he wanted to discuss but didn’t have time to in this one, stuff like motor selection.

Been playing around with their motor simulator today. Pretty cool that you can build up a kit in the shopping area and it will link you to the simulator with all of those components already selected. It also lets you compare two different systems with the graphs overlaid on each other.

are you looking at a front hub motor? @Andrew_Squirrel you built one like this right?

Yeah, Grin Tech is pretty good, front hub motor is pretty good. In retrospect I might have gone with a direct drive motor instead of one with planetary gears because they have been pretty noisy lately which might mean the gears are wearing down. I thought I was going to be running out of battery often so I wanted the freewheel option available but I’ve never had an instance where I haven’t had enough battery to get me home.

Yep, probably doing a front motor based on what I’ve been researching. I was leaning toward the eZee front that he used until I saw a video of it and heard how loud it is.

Now I’m comparing that motor to the Grin All Axle direct drive motor. More expensive tho.

Here’s a video from them, queued up where they have an eZee motor go by

oh yeah that one is loud! the Bafang is much quieter.
