Weird Build Dithering Thread Infinity: Part 2

I went back and forth about buying one of these and was planning on building up similar. Wound up deciding that total economic collapse was a good reason to not buy more bikes. Now I’m jealous.

Ah shit I think I’m gonna build a sw8 fixie. I’ve never owned one so I’m pretty excited but I’m also quickly realizing how little I know

I’ll mostly just use for puttering around town but would like to fuck around on some trails and gravel too. Thinking 35mm tires, g ones or similar

I assume I can find a cheap wheelset used but I’m tempted to build a set with wider/tubeless rims and a shimano dyno hub I already have. If I go this route, what rear hub should I use? The frame has 126mm spacing so I think 120 or 130 will be fine but I can’t decide if I want fixed only or fixed/free. Will I ever actually flip the wheel if I have the option?

I flipped the wheel on my sw8 fixie about once a month, untill I got tired of whatever was on there and went back.

bro this is tarck. go get one.

you might flip the wheel. Single speed is really a lot more fun but there is a true zen to riding fixed.

fixed/fixed so you can run two different cogs, or cheat a freewheel on there if you really need to

@Master_Stabby @turpentine Well those both sounds reasonable, but I lean towards thinking I might never ride single speed.

Also, I still look back fondly at the summer of 2013 when I regularly borrowed my then roommates steamroller. I’m working on it.

I did some medium distance stuff in it, and it was nice to switch to coasting when my legs were rubbery and I was 20 miles from home. Also my fixed cog was a 17 and the freewheel was a 19 I think, so it was easier.

I didn’t realize that was an option, I think I’ll do that.

Anyone have a recommendation for a fixed/fixed hub preferably less than $75?

32h? I might have a formula someone here sent me
Edit: for free
Edit 2: fix/fix? Nevermind

formulas really are fine, or novatec

but also, if you are in a populated area you should be able to find ‘fixie’ wheelsets at the ‘formula to deep v’ quality level used pretty readily for cheaper than a new wheelset.

I see a few cheap wheels on my local Craigslist (though not as many as I used to, maybe that’s more of a FB marketplace crowd now?) but I want tubeless and dyno.

Here’s my plan

Surly rear hub fix/free
Shimano 3n72 I have in the mess
Dt Swiss r460 rims
Dt comp spokes
G one 35mm

I know it’s kinda silly but it would satisfy my immediate wants for this build and for once I just don’t want to dither about this anymore. Also I don’t mind throwing some money at something right now and this seems like an ok place

@Bootus you can buy my wheels when I get bored of the fixie life

i don’t know about the surly ultra new, or whatever they have now. but the surly new track was HORRIBLE and i’ve never wrecked so many bearings on anything else ever.

The new ones are fine. Basically just formula with different geometry.

Get the Phil wood eccentric BSA bb and ball out of control with an eBay Dura-Ace crank.

does anyone remember the Forward Components eccentric hollowtech BB? existed for a short time and was significantly cheaper than the Philcentric.

Looks like there’s another version from First components but it’s a chonky boi

editing in another option for future searches:

Exzentriker EBB for 24mm and 24/22mm spindles
http://webedition.trickstuff.de/en/products/exzentriker_KL.php

Beer Components 30mm EBB

Oh shit, a Katu path I had never even considered. Derpouts are horizontal, so would just need a 135 fixed/free hub.

TC I’ve never owned a Surly either, was considering doing a twofer with a metallic lilac Steamroller
