Weird Build Dithering Thread Infinity: Part 2

I have also used road bartape on the mtb grip section

benefits from plastic bmx expanding bar plugs

Well I managed to get the Jones kraton grip off without destroying it so I’ll probably just put those back on there. You can get the long ESI grips without having to go to Jones but having tried ESI and the kraton now, I think I like how ESI looks but I like the feel of the kraton better.

I wouldn’t call those grips, not grippy at all.

Not super shocked but the 1700mm brake hose was like 150mm short for the Dummy. Long hose ordered!

Friends, I have been dithering about fender widths. I will share, please let me know if you have any opinions.

My simworks turtle 42s are nice fenders. Listed specs for these place my gp4k 28s (which as we all know are 32ish on modern rims) right at the middle top of their clearance range. 5mm of added fender width on each side is supposed to be what you want for a road bike. But I’m interested in going wider on my next set. With the rolled bit under each edge I only get about 3mm of clearance to my tires. And it’s like 1 cm plus of space in the middle. So if something bumps my fenders and it’s wet out it’s probably going to start rubbing. I just want something more robust.

Is it nuts to want something like a 45 or 50 mm fender for 32s? Honjo and simworks websites seem to imply that it is.

For the nordavinden? I had some old v-o 45mm fenders on mine and they got squeezed by the brakes a little. I was going to go down a few mm for more brake clearance.

45s on 32s is pretty standard fit for sportif/sport tourers. You might need to crimp just a tiny smidge through the brake depending on their position relative to the caliper.

45 over 32 seems fine. I believe Jan-approved is +10mm or 12mm over tire size, and all the bikes in his books look really good with that type of clearances.

My issue is that if I can fit 45 fenders, then I will try to stuff in 40+ tires because more tire=more gooder obviously. Then I have to get really precise with fender install, and riding through any gravel is all kinds of noisy. Also I get more side-spray than is ideal.

don’t do that lol

Having seen some of jimmy’s fender installs, I can believe he does just that.

I run the biggest tires I can under fenders, but always with some sort of emergency quick release on the fork.

Did they ditch press fit BB yet?

new treks are all T47.5 (the .5 being for better tool purchase during assembly?), I think.

BB86 is ok

that all sound so exhausting. Why can’t we just BSA68 and be happy?

if I could figure out a non-JA light mount situation for this Ritchey fork I’d probably already have it for the DayRuiner.

  • mounting a light on one side of the fork gives that awful wheel shadow
  • bar mount gets in the way of any sort of bag attachment possibilities
  • maybe mount on top of a fender?
  • rig up a 3-point mount from each blade and then to the back of the fork crown?

clearly this is what you need:
