If I replace the groupset, probably. But, it’s still smooth as silk, and I see no need to replace something that works now.
Another factor is I have to completely disassemble the bike every time it gets put into the S&S case (the joy of 60cm frames). That, and some of the other shenanigans I dealt with in my touring make me nervous of hydro.
Part of this morning’s conspicuous consumption was deciding what parts were going to leave the stash in place of the new parts coming in. Ended up with those plus a bunch more parts set aside for my next trip to the bicycle collective. I’ve wanted to go through that stuff for a while now and it just seemed like too many decisions to make so it never happened. Feels good.
Applied some love to the VO rando rack to see if it would fit the Sam. Looks hot, not fully sure it’s going to work yet.
I’ve been slowly removing powder coat from an old skeleton to get a good look at the brazing before I decide to commit some money towards getting it refinished.
If my oil to cable transition on the OPEN is unsatisfactory I would totally look at this. Would mean my investment in Ratio was short-lived but at least I could be rid of the SRAM ecosystem at last. I see the Radvertiser did a reasonably in depth story on the Equals. I got my Pocket app to text to speech it to me last night. Some finer detail in it I’d not heard in other places.
I am always confused at the way I can swap out my rear wheel from and 11-40 to an 11-50 with no attention to the B-tension, but go down from the 40 to a 36 on the front and it needs to be tweaked to hell.
Trying to get the Salsa Mukluk to feel comfy - the past year on my low, long slack Banshee has ruined old-school geometry for me when it comes to off-road.
Hopefully, the longer stem + stooge moto bars works out. Not many options to explore if it doesn’t.
Well not me. But after red eye to Florida, morning nap, I was put to work assembling a cheap Walmart trike for parents neighbor. Funny how you miss having your own tools. And I can’t imagine some poor schmuck buying one without any bike or mechanical know how. I guess Walmart would send someone to assemble for $80. But old ladies arent fans of randos showing up, so I got tapped. Well my dad volunteered but he gladly passed it to me.
I run a relatively narrow (40cm) bar on my Factor and couldn’t find a great place to mount my new Knog Blinder light, so I hacked this together using a PDW Light Nug and some miscellaneous pieces from a generic stem computer mount:
Remains to be seen whether I like this long term. It gets the light out of the way of my hands when riding on the tops but I don’t love it - it makes mounting the Garmin kind of a hassle. Ideally I’d get something that attaches to the bottom side of the computer mount, underneath the puck, but I don’t have the fabrication skills or equipment required to make something myself.
Found an old bottom pull xt FD for the mongoose in my LBS parts bin.
Went to swap BB for a shorter one. Couldnt find the old school tool so didnt bother. (found it later). Replaced the outer NW ring with a 46 and installed a shimano bar end shifter on a bar mount. Works great. Living the 3x dream. Put some blue candies on it, taking off the mallets that I had fixed and put on it the day before.
Litespeed Ocoee…Trying to get rid of the creak in the drivetrain. Suspect its the Tune crank death rattle, took it off. Put in a more appropriate BB for the 960 3x crank I was trying to use, and realised what a mess it is, granny is bent so will take some serious tweaking. The outer ring had bent teeth which I straightened. Didnt have room on the bar for a thumbie do to brake interference, so had to go thru my 3x sram trigger shifters. So long since I’d been in one I couldn’t figure out how to thread the cable through. Got one sorted. It’s shifts in a fashion. Pulling off all the “cable connectors” which I had used for my flats to drops conversion as I am going to put the Sram Red drop shifters on my OPEN with the Growtac Equals. Started pulling the shifters off the bars in readiness for a gut biota transplant. Not rushing into it.
