What did you do to your crosscheck today?

Swapped out the winter tires on the day ruiner earlier this week for the surprisingly not turdly at all Marathon Supremes. Pulled out the Polyvalent and did yesterday’s commute with it. Shifting was bad because the shifter kept slipping and there’s no way to adjust the friction level on it. It’s probably time to retire the 35 YO Suntour thumbies. Don’t want to deal with that now so I’m back to commuting on the day ruiner and wow do I much more enjoy how fast the 700 x 35 tires on it feel compared to the 650b x 47 on the Polyvalent.

Took the 10x gripshift right and 3x thumby left off the goose and set it up with new grips and 3x9 speed sram, mostly X0. Sram was so good back then. Didnt even need a quarter turn on any cable.

Also built a new lower dynamo cable with some xt30 joiners, an SP spade, cable and heat-shrink. Also fixed my shitty gloworm lights with Suguru and more heat shrink on the shitty cables.

I had a hilarious low speed crash as I pulled over to let a trail runner come up the steep singletrack. Ended up landing in a patch of stinging nettles with my feet higher than my head and we both had a good laugh.

Decided to deal with this shifter today. Removed it and realized that Riv sent me two left Sunrace shifters back in June instead of the left+right shifters I’d ordered. Damn. Decided to use a left Deore thumbie from the bin instead even though I wanted a right shifter. After that was done I started messing with the Suntour shifter and the thing I tried turning on it before that didn’t move at the time started to move and actually does adjust the friction level. Pulled the Deore shifter and put the Suntour back on. Put some brass ferrules on the rear shifter housing while I was in there. Cleaned and lubed the chain, and cleaned the the cassette. Much quieter now. Swapped the Surly ET tires for Bokens.

Yesterday the Lorry got a good cleaning for the first time in four years. So dirty. I should probably clean my bikes more often than never. Pulled the lights and rear rack. Installed the new BB, shorter cranks, new saddle, and parts bin grips.

The tightened Suntour thumbie did much better on today’s ride to the office. Noticing and filing away the small part of the kickstand mount that was contacting the shifter cable probably helped.

My Bassi Hogs Back had that same issue. The standard Shimano bottom bracket guide didn’t work and Bassi supplies the correct one with their frames. I bought mine from Analog Cycles and for whatever reason they didn’t include the bottom bracket guide. Bassi made it right and it clears with like… 0.5 mm.

I’ll blame the pandemic for the kickstand plate issue since this frame was made sometime in the first half of 2021 when things were still crazy. It’s slightly too far towards the drive side and not something that I noticed when it was originally setup with indexed shifting. Most folx probably wouldn’t have ever noticed.

Didn’t think to try one of the slotted Campy guides in the bin, whoops.

I once had a problem where my bottom biscuit was really really hard to screw in. Turns out the cable guide screw was too long. Not a problem with external cups, but the body of the cartridge biscuit contacted the screw a little bit. A few mm shorter screw solved it.

Had this idea a while ago for mounting a bottle cage that doesn’t have long mounting tabs to a bike without braze-ons.

VO bottle cage straps + VO Retro Cage + Speedplay cleat mounting screws.

Works great!

Took Sensah dangler off Sundeal and put it on the hardtail. Going to put more sensible deore stuff on the sundeal soon. I’m pretty sure I’ve never ridden a mountain bike that wasn’t single speed. Starting a new chapter.

Did the last of the work needed to the Lorry. Swapped the 11 spd drivetrain for 10 spd stuff from the parts bin that won’t get used, yet another BB swap to get the chainline right, swapped the pedals, and spent a bunch of time getting adhesive goo off from various stickers. Now it just needs to get ridden somewhere with an interesting wall for some pics to get it up for sale.

Finished the commuter bike changes. Swapped Schwalbe Marathons with the studded tires for summer duty. Added new basket, handlebars, and bartape. And, for the first time ever, I’m 100% happy with the wrap job.

The front PEES wheel got tensioned and trued.

Wheels were fun to build at first, then it sucked and it would take me years to build a single set, and now it’s back to being fun again.

As part of working on the Lorry, I finally used the Abbey HAG for the first time. It’s such a nice tool. I’d probably appreciate it even more had I use the Park version first. Also, had a bit of a lol because the HAG cost 40% of the bike it was used on.

Never ride without protection.

my brain went
“this bike is a pipe bomb” to
“this bike is an IED”
“this bike is an IUD”

I’m not trying to say it makes sense I’m just saying that’s what happened
