What did you do to your crosscheck today?

Did you bring enough for everybody?

A while back I posted about this whacky but amazing early oughts Specialized HRXC I built up with a Rawland ULV fork. In an attempt to clear up some clutter I’ve decided to list the nice dynamo 26+ wheelset on there for sale and lace up these Echo trials rims I have laying around to put on there instead. I’ve also got some Surly ET’s laying around that miraculously fit out back on that thing. I figured no one would ever buy the Echo hoops or the Surly tires, but they’re both absolutely cromulent and reliable for this bike (which is basically on permaloan to my in-laws). I even used Schrader tubes on it since they don’t speak Presta. Anyway, it was nice to lace up the wheels with my 4 week old in the ErgoBaby on my chest. And I’m just happy that some things languishing in my parts bin are getting put to use, and that I can hopefully make some money off the other wheelset.

sup nice 26er wheelset haver. I’m v stoked @kevinwulf got mine instead of the marketplace bike buyer.

tryna help out a friend who’s been continuing to ride his LHT into the ground and is short on time and funds. replaced the drivetrain in '23, made a list of things that needed doing (rims were heavily worn, now they’re on life support, cones are pitted and NLA etc) FFWD to 2026 and we try again.

bike24 shipping costs and restricted items has put basic shimano hubs and DT / Sapim spokes into the moneybags bucket.

Amazingly found a 36H Dyad and a 24" 36H hole wheel laced up to a parallax hub at the tip shop on the same day, and an SP dynamo wheel on another occasion, plus 2x new marathons. Fresh drivetrain, full cables/housing, v brakes, spokes&nips all en route. dyno wheel needed some nipple lubing but everything freed up and trued up ok.

what a great (nondisc) hub, still perfect bearings/cones. date code is 2004, old enough to vote.

Swapped the studded tires on the disc trucker for the big apples over the weekend. Warmest winter on record meant I spent as much time putting the studded tires on and taking them off as I spent riding them (exactly one commute).

Started taking it apart. The dream is dead. It’s too bad this frame didn’t work for me, it’s sweet af.

Found some treasure in there:

Did the absolute worst possible fender install of all time on the xtracycle.

I lost all the struts for this extremely used and well worn fender, but I wanted to put it on, so I bolted the tab at the BB side to the frame, used an old toe strap to hold it up at the back of the frame, and some random strip of vinyl strapping for the top front. If I’m honest I’ll probably replace the straps with zip ties at some point but it was completely without issue on a bumpy 10 mile ride around town today, so yolo.

Not what I did to MY bike but a friend reached out to get a nice upright chill 90s mtb to townie conversion going, and we’re at the point where it’s a completely functional bike and the rest comes down to personal choices. Which for someone who doesn’t know a lot about bikes is tough, and he doesn’t want me to just curate the whole thing. I threw on some old VO milan bars, but they’re not particularly wide or upright.

The bike has a 25.4 diameter quill on it which is the big issue, I sent him a huge list of possible cockpit options which boil down to “buy this specific old stem off ebay and one of the limited cruiser bars which will fit it” or “buy this specific threadless adapter, one of these multitude of stems, and one of these handful of nice modern alt/cruiser bars” and one of those obviously costs a lot more.

Anyways he’s gonna have a sick Giant Iguana townie soon enough.

Been in this boat. The biggest sales point for updating the stem is “try taking that bar out of that old single bolt stem…now imagine this process with a removable face plate!” And they usually see the utility.

Yeah but I’m the one wrenching LOL. If it wasn’t an odd sized quill I’d tell him to get some cheap 31.8 faceplate quill stem and an old quill of mine and say whatever handlebar you want will work.

He also wants to be bolt upright but doesn’t know that he probably won’t enjoy being bolt upright. But maybe he will!

My go to bike rn has a White Industries ENO eccentric hub with a 6 bolt fixed cog on the disc flange. But I decided to put on an ACS Paws freewheel on the freewheel side as a bailout. I haven’t used it once so I decided to be a weight weenie and remove it.

The WI ENO eccentric tool wouldn’t fit on that freewheel though. So I hit up WI, and they implied that removing the axle (using a 4mm hex), which then made it easy as pie to use a typical 4 prong freewheel removal tool.

…which makes we wonder why the ENO eccentric tool exists at all???

I bought a bottle of Dawn Powerwash after hearing that it was a phenomenal bike cleaner from The Bike Farmer and promptly didn’t bring it down to my bike mess for a year, but finally did and cleaned off two of my saltiest dustiest bikes and holy shit that stuff is magic.

Yeah, our mechs started using it last year and seem to really love it.

I should get a bottle for home.

I also started using sometime last year it because of The Bike Farmer and it’s worked pretty well. Bought a can of furniture polish as well.

Sure beats my previous way of cleaning (doing nothing).

I also use Dawn Powerwash only because we had it and my bike was dirty, it works great.

It does work great. And my mechanic buddy just refills the empty sprayers either Dawn and isopropyl alcohol instead of buying new ones. Works great.

Rode the bmx at a skatepark. I think I aired a quarter pipe. Did some drops and small stair sets and my body doesn’t hurt.
