i would really really appreciate a good glove reccomendation
i just replaced my 7 year old rando long finger gloves with some giordana’s, and at about an hour into a ride my finger tips go numb. and thats with some stretchy cotton gloves underneath.
no specific recommendations, as there are plenty of gloves that’ll work. although i do like my xc skiing lobster gloves and my specialized cycling gloves, but often times if your feet/hands are cold it means that your core isn’t warm enough.
I too am a now a lobster glove fan. Picked up a pair of the Pearl variety in early November and they were actually too warm for the still above freezing temps back then. Now they’re perfect.
I’ve been going back and fourth on it. I hate when I first get out, but after I’m riding it’s not bad. Especially riding through some epic snowfall, that can be pretty fun. I mostly hate getting wet.
Word. Today kicked my ass. 17 degrees, 0 with a nasty bit of wind chill. I love snow fall and even navigating some rough roads but frozen fingers and toes are never fun. Nor is going out for a good ride and before heading back for home discovering your gear is still sweat laden.
First wipe-out of the season.
Coming up to the stop sign at the end of my block I was suddenly on a huge patch of ice and started sliding.
Because I was setting up for a turn I went down on my side and slid, still clipped in for like 20 feet.
Fuck gigantic patches of ice.
i just decided to switch my bike from fixed with front break and clips to fixed with two breaks and platforms to avoid episodes like that, and the ones where you’re going 2 mph and the bike slides right out form under you. i’ve been off the bike for a bout a week, it was about 40 last time i rode. today it got down to past 20… 20 still feels pretty mild, i’m really loving it right now.
I had an incident not unlike your wipe out today. Except, instead of falling while trying to stop on the patch of ice, I did a quick 180, still clipped in, facing the car behind me. I dont know who was more confused - me or the driver of the car.
Mark V with fenders and 35c rear and 30c front cross tires. Single speed/ both brakes of course. I like it but all the snow getting stuck in brakes/fork/dropouts is lame. Not enough clearance, not the ideal frame for this but its what I have…
i just got home from work (bike delivery) and it is -5 with the wind chill, but i was dressed for it and it wasn’t too bad…
also, my friend is loaning me a 35c studded tire i put on the front and it is amazing. its so much easier to stay upright it almost takes the fun out… my rear is a 28c slick though, so it is a good mix of fast and traction on the ice.
Yeah, I’m struggling with the same thing. Should I ride my CX bike to work, or my wide-tired road bike? I’ll almost certainly take the road bike, since I don’t have fenders on my CX, but man it would be nice to have those knobbies.
I am trying to get motivated to go out now 30 (not bad) with 30 mph wind gust. This would be fine except that when I get to where I am going I will be rebuilding a stone wall.
I’ve got a pal who swears by conti contacts commuting in the snow (not ice) because he would rather cut thru the snow then grip into it. I understand the concept but I don’t feel comfortable doing that.
tarckest winter bike ever. Granted the frame doesn’t have enough clearance but it works for now. Maybe ill get a hold of something better when it happens to appear before me.
