You're gunna hurt yourself: Carry Shit Olympics (aka the Cargo Bike thread)

It’d be a car-free dither I believe.

Big dummy probably does make the most practical sense… right? It seems to have the least that could go wrong with it.

In my mind, all I want is a front-load but it sounds like a liability with the linkage.

How much do you really want to carry?

I’m still curious about an omnium mini

Okay I realize I need to articulate my thoughts more, first.
I’d been thinking about it two ways, Obviously each route comes with its own existential delimma.

The first is a limited mobility migration station mostly used for getting to the next place to stay put and be comfortable for extended periods: 1000w hub-slush front-load skeleton that could have a large tote/table/solar/battery station (self-charging e-bike). I’d carry a larger tent, more kitchen stuff and more water. I expect the total weight of gear would be under 300lbs. I have this concept like 50% researched and believe it could work just fine but then I send my mind down the road, smashing away at the freaky bits; It just seems like constant liability with electrical failures, linkage, overbearing weight across obstacles (limited mobility) and also frustration with potential theft.

The second: just keep is it simple/analog. A big dummy makes a lot of sense to me here. Pack a little more than a higher mileage adventure but overall it’s just bike-packing that isn’t living out of fully-stuffed panniers; I want to be able to get something without having to unpack a whole ass bag.

having gone bikepacking with my partner and their omnium mini max, i think they’re pretty sweet bikepacking bikes. they don’t roll over stuff great due to the small front wheel, but you can carry a lot, and if stuff comes off the platform at night, you have a built in table.

Sunday while we were at the ferry terminal a guy rolled up on a R+M e-cargo bike. We got to talking and turns out he’s a sales rep from Germany here on a tour. We chatted bikes for a while then he insisted my friend and I test ride the bike. It was amazing. I had no idea Rohloff made a robo shift unit. We had like an hour to kill at that point so I was just riding this long ass digital bike all over the terminal and the streets around it.

I want one.
I need one.
I lust after one.

But lol it costs around $13,000 so that’s not gonna happen.

Instead I’m gonna mid-drive convert my Clydesdale and hate it and still want a R+M.

One of these came up on marketplace and I missed it but might work @Brendal_Crimpton , maybe in addition to a front load option.

Has anybody tried one of these? The price makes me wish I was in the market for such a thing.

if you are designing that ground up why leave all that space above the front tire?

I hear you, but it looks like with fork crown and fender clearance, it’s not really too excessive.

I was considering one of those when I thought my Peugeot had a fucked up headtube, but gambled on a Clydesdale fork anyway knowing I could round up another frame with ease. One bong is a solid price for a well spec’d little cargo bike :atmo:

In the video there’s a lot of room in that crown

That deck is lower than on the Lorry, an also start from scratch bike.

Consuming one as a backup for my Lorry is tempting since I don’t have lots of confidence that the rear dropouts are long for this world at e-bike speeds on the bumpy trail mine spends most of its time.

The Bombtrack might also be at least 10 lbs lighter.

there is no reason for those racks to be so high and it makes the bikes worse

the answer is gravity

This pic shows a Lorry with a bolt-on front rack that’s lower (and could be flipped and mounted on the seat tube!), not sure if this version was ever actually available.

Oh it looks like they’re selling the medium version of the Bombtrack, about 40mm less stack and 23mm more reach compared to the Lorry. Too small for me.

First longer distance toddler trip (40km).
