Impressive! Did you have to stop a lot?
Picked up the Xtracycle I alluded to in my own thread about ebike conversions. But itâs not a conversion yet and I carried my first shit in it today for the DC Coffee Outside ride.
Looks to me like what you picked up was a graham cracker.
Weird name for the kid
Yes! Travel time for 40km was like 5hrs!
@paris whatâs that green sheet on the bottom of your basket?
Itâs a thin sheet of foam from Michaelâs (probably). Cuts down on rattling and blocks spray that gets around the fenders.
Didnât you just get an xtracycle?
I was reaaaaaaaaaaaaly hoping no one would call me out on that. It was 5:30 in the morning and I didnât want to maneuver it through my storage room while old faithful here was just sitting by the door ready to go.
Fair enough!
Itâs more fun to carry shit on a bike not meant for it than one that is
Says a guy with multiple cargo bikes.
Ya donât have to convince me, buddy!
Thanks yâall for the insights last week on cargo bike stuff. @Dickason_Daniel that coho trailer might make the build list, I truly hadnât considered a tagalong, but I might even be open to a two-wheeled flatbed.
At the moment Iâm leaning between three skeletons:
Bombtrack Monroe Cargo
(thanks @Rusty_Piton for the tip)
The bombtrack seems the most practical overall, but perhaps only specializing in being compact⌠I imagine itâs okay on trails and great in urban situations. Could be great with a trailer on the back. I imagine this would minimally cover my storage needs, but maybe I could get creative? I know it uses thru-axles, so the only option Iâm aware of for slushing would be a mid-drive.
Bullitt
Deep down, a bullitt is my first choice because I have owned and loved it before and enjoy packing too much gear with me everywhere I go. Despite not being good on trails⌠I can see myself getting to outdoor areas with more food and water to enjoy the spoils.
Big Dummy
Some part of me has to relax about disliking these aesthetics, because this could be the most fun and capable on trails by a large margin.
What are your thoughts?
Grin has options for front and rear thru axles, not cheap tho. Theyâre direct drive which makes them nice and quiet, but maybe not the best option if things get too steep. If you end up making your way through SLC you can test ride mine with their front hub motor.
Front (youâll want the fast wind on a 20" wheel)
Rear
Noted, thanks for the tip!
Big dummy will be tough with the trailer, since it attaches at the axle. Would have to get custom with a solution.
I thoroughly enjoyed riding my xtracycle offroad, with all the weight in the back you can even grab all the front brake and do front skids down loose descents. Definitely the most capable offroader. Wish I hadnât sold mine for my bullet clone.
