You're gunna hurt yourself: Carry Shit Olympics (aka the Cargo Bike thread)

I had considered the big fat dummy and then 29x3 with some electric rear hub but then that’s a project and the 26" one is ready to go day one out of the box and probably cost me less when it’s done, which is nice sometimes.

24" works great for a cargo bike unless you’re a very tall person

Having the same problem but I cannot bear to sell the Bullitt

Yup

After riding an omnium, I can’t wait to sell my bullet

I didn’t like the Omnium at all. Felt very tippy with a high CoG.

Used to see them actually working but these days they are always ridden by shiny guys in stretchy pants with no cargo.

like… for fun? that’s like driving a pavement princess truck

well yeah if you put a roli up there i could imagine it being sub-optimal

having never actually met you or roli i picture a dance floor with roli doing roli things but above your front wheel

I never actually used it to carry him. It’s not really made for child carrying.
Also, this morning, I saw a broken Omnium kickstand laying in the dirt alongside the trail. That was weird.

I get that, one of the things I love about the bullitt is how low and planted it feels. The omnium is way more like a regular bike for me and that’s what I’m after most of the time I want to ride with a whole bunch of stuff.

I probably didn’t do myself any favors in the CoG department by bolting a big, heavy plastic bin to it.
It’s a good bike but wasn’t the right one for me at the time.

that was a joke, just in case. i know you’re proper safe about kid portaging and a rather good dad to boot

but the idea of roli dancing on a mobile stage, including railing some corners is a good one

FWIW I put a 27.5 on the front of my dummy and I think it improved things. Running 2.5 Extraterrestrials front and rear was the deal too.

That’s cool. If I end up with a dummy and take it more than around town I am definitely going to want a bigger front wheel.

Anyone else do some of their best thinking on a bike ride that went twice as long as you planned? Last time I rode my bullitt I remembered why I like it so much, I really hate having any weight that’s not me behind the saddle. I really like having my cargo in front of me so I know when/if something jumps off the bike.

I was trying so hard to n-1 myself out of getting the e-bike car replacement I really want and then just a purpose build bike only to carry my kids around. I think I’d be making a big compromise to make one bike do both.

All to say, I’m back on the idea of a used acoustic big dummy that’s only for hauling my kids and their bikes around town and then an Omnium e-bike as my main transportation and cargo hauler. And that’s where the trouble really begins, there is no easy button to just order the bike on Q since they discontinued it a while ago and there’s none I could find for sale locally.

I’ve searched ebay, pinkbike, facebook, and have come up mostly empty. There’s one in Ontario and one in North Carolina, and neither one looks like something I’d want to pay to have shipped here. Looking for any other places to search for this bike and if anyone finds one on their local marketplace if they would be willing to facilitate.

On FB if you haven’t yet, join groups like "Surly Bicycle Trader
or “Cargo Bike Enthusiasts” or “Family Bikes Chicago”.

I made all those names up but I’m sure they exist and niche groups like that are a good way to find specific bikes and also usually allow “Wanted” posts which are also good for finding certain bikes.

There are definitely facebook groups that can help.
Have you talked to Sam Mack? He seems to be the most Omnium connected local bike shop guy.

Long tail on the bullet

Off to Facebook I go in search of my unicorn surly…
