You're gunna hurt yourself: Carry Shit Olympics (aka the Cargo Bike thread)

And you have the bricks to build a hut to keep it in

Don’t tempt me. I’m building a tiny workshop in my apartments laundry room. I’m eyeing a tiny belt grinder currently. Don’t make me buy a tiny lathe.

Teeny lathe!

oh no, more like this

17" between centers. But really I’m not gonna do that.

EDIT: Oh man, I just found littlemachineshop.com and I can get all benchtop machines. Like a mini mill. Holy shit.

…he said, scanning Craigslist for the opportunity to do exactly that

Any first hand experience on here putting a cargo bike on a hitch rack? Internet says Hollywood is my huckleberry. But some first hand experience would be welcome.

I put a Longtail on a tandem roof rack once. Was a 2 person job for sure.

I’ve put everything but a cargobike on a Draftmaster. Recumbent trikes (both tadpoles and Delta’s), tandems of every description including recumbent tandems, etc. A cagro bike would be mere child’s play.

I think they’re only available in 2" receiver size, but it’s been quite a few years since I sold them.

Also might want to look at trays meant for motorcycles, and secure the bike like they do.

What kind of cargo bike and what kind of hitch rack?
Tray style racks are specced by bike weight, tire size, and wheelbase
Hanging racks only care about weight and whether there is ample top tube room to grab on to.
If you can find one that accommodates your bike according to those specs, there’s not much reason it should matter whether it’s cargo or not
Those moto trays are very versatile although they require a bit of extra work to load securely

Motorcycle trays would be rad for that. They also usually have ramps for loading and unloading. I did a 350lb moto by myself. A cargo bike would be super easy. Bonus is they’re also so fucking cheap if you already have a hitch

I’m only dealing with a big dummy. So the longer wheelbase is the main issue.

Folks with mid drive conversion experience, bafang, etc. I’m future dithering about a motor for my cagro, but wondering if this extra tube is gonna preclude a crank based motor setup. Any ideas?
BB is a standard 68mm shell, and the big horizontal tube is ovalized and probably about the same width as the shell.

I did a Bafang on a cagro, the motor can be positioned at any rotation, so you should be able to get on on there. Biggest issue ended up being ground clearance with it hanging directly below the bb instead of being tucked further up the downtube. Hopping curbs probably not a good idea.

Actually, looking closer at your pic, I don’t know how it would work with the dropped position of that lower tube. Might exceed the space allotted between the center of the bb and the edge of the motor itself. If that chainstay is high enough you might be able to stuff it in that nook.

I always figured if I were to retrofit my bullitt with a motor I would just do a front wheel thingy. Didn’t @Andrew_Squirrel do that with his cycletruck?

I haven’t looked too hard but my fork is a thru axle, and ive only seen 9mm qr wheels. I guess I really need to do more investigation.

Grin Tech has this new universal axle hub motor. It is direct drive, not geared/freewheel though so its going to inherently have regenerative capability (aka, mild drag) whenever you aren’t actively feeding power into it. Direct drive does have other advantages though

@johnasavoia I’m not sure it’ll fit either. I have a bafang I can measure some critical dims if you need, but even if you removed the kickstand I’m not sure it’d mount between the boom and chainstays. FWD might be a better option.
