You're gunna hurt yourself: Carry Shit Olympics (aka the Cargo Bike thread)

Is there a good reason to use wood for a cargo bike box, or is tensioned fabric (like cordura panels) a better option?

Why not both? solid flat base, framework with fabric for sides and top?

Oh yeah I mean definitely a solid base, either plastic or bamboo or whatever. I’m just looking at a lot of box designs, and they seem a bit heavier on whimsy and lighter on funcitonal design with contemporary materials.

I think if kiddos are your cargo then a solid box is likely easier to build seating in, easier to attach or make some sort of rain protection for, and sturdier against intrusion if you get in an accident.

Solid also can extend beyond the frame in some designs and act as a skid block attachment point (thinking front corners) for when you drop/lean the bike on it’s side not using a kickstand or whatever.

For non-sentient cargo I’m not sure what advantages solid sides really have.

I still very much want to replace the random board with some modern plastic platform, think I even know which flavor I want, drilled and bolted directly to the frame, but I did find an absolute perfectly matched size tupperware for groceries and keeping stuff dry. $10 at target.

Ah right long John = seat attached to floor and back of box. I had my head stuck in the Yepp style attachment that goes through the running board.
I guess I want cordura side panels, then? Like what Straws made, but bigger?

I just love this huge thing.

what is this frame thing

That’s the coolest and most punk rock cargo bike around.

Tern going hard on the Dad bike ad.

Welp that looks super rad, would be better with a big front wheel.

That Tern? Nah. It’s just a big ticket version of any random bike with a Yepp seat bolted on. Dude in the video was wearing a backpack. Ebike is fine for big cargo bike carrying big loads, what’s the added utility for this model?

Oh wait lol also a folding bike? SUPER ODD that the company product page has zero images of someone handily folding up the bike with a kid seat attached, which seems to be one of the main use cases.

I thought the gsd was cool looking, but this seems like a miss

Old Research Designs Coyote mtb frame some buddies of mine chopped up and made into a cagro. A little bit mad max but everything is to spec and I love the fuck out of the heavy thing.

I guess I was more focused on the dude with tattoos playing with a cute kid in a park. I didn’t even realize it was the Vektron and not the GSD.

What diameter/gauge of tubing is the front half made from? And are the tube ends left open (it looks like they are given that you’re hooking things into them) or are there plugs set inside the tubing ends to keep them from filling with water and rusting out?

Oh man that’s video is so insta aspirational for all the boring dads out there.

I can measure, but I’d guess ~2.5in diameter, they’re open, definitely getting rusty. The paint they used immediately began to flake off all over, as soon as they have a sand blasting booth big enough, a proper powdercoat has been promised.

It looks like someone told XZibit about cargo bikes.

Pretty interesting developments for me on this front, will post more once everything’s set.

So does the trailer MU to the lead bicycle, or does it just pay attention to drawbar pull?

The mail / small parcel delivery carriers are testing a version of those e-trailers here currently. Looks pretty rad to see what seems like pallet of boxes come downn the street by bike
