You're gunna hurt yourself: Carry Shit Olympics (aka the Cargo Bike thread)

Dude, that’s genius! Fuckin score finding a second base! What are the chances of that???
I’m gonna get a heftier box and do like you!

At first glance this was just a baby in a box

We used a similar setup, but our infant car seat was a hand-me-down from before those sweet hot-swappable bases. The seat fit perfectly in the tub so I just used straps to secure seat to the bike frame (they aren’t tensioned in the photo)

btw, that tub is pretty sturdy and was like 7 EUR at the home store. I think they use them for job-site garbage transfer bins

But not here, in the new guy thread.

Bringing home one of Mig’s frames to chop apart and put couplers into (plus a donor frame that has one of the couplers in question):

what tire do you have on BOB? does it even matter on a trailer?

A 38mm Kenda Kwest. The 16" tire world isn’t that great, and this one doesn’t actually actively suck.

TC: I like this BOB trailer better than any other carry shit setup i’ve had.

Alright I’ve got a couple hundred miles on the Big Dummy, these observations are unlikely to be news here but I feel compelled to put them down.

  1. It’s definitely slower than my LHT. I’m not fast to begin with, but I feel like my average speed on the LHT is like 12ish mph and on the Dummy it’s like 10. Noticeable but not a big deal at the distances I’m riding.
  2. Feel like I’m gonna go through brake pads on this thing, unless bb7s generally require frequent adjustment?
  3. It took a couple weeks to understand how the bags work but I think I get it now. Need to make sure they are cinched down good or it rides weird for the first mile or 2 as stuff settles.
  4. I get the cargo limitations vs a bathtub front loader now. I feel like I can carry more of the same sort of stuff that I carried on my LHT but not necessarily different stuff. This is still a welcome upgrade and I haven’t messed with strapping too much weird stuff to the deck yet. That said I guess I grabbed two bundles of firewood and still picked up a pizza on the way home, so that was sweet.

Overall I really dig it though. Despite being huge and slow it is still fun to ride and feels like a bike. Still riding the LHT when I don’t need the extra capacity but I could envision the Dummy as an only bike under the right circumstances

i feel like my experience with bb7s involved frequent adjustments
